The Finn Bear is a small puukko inspired fixed blade that fits woodcraft, hunting, and everyday cutting, with a comfortable handle and a broad tear drop butt that works well for tamping jars or kitchen prep. It sharpens easily, holds an edge through daily use, and the cloth sheath is more comfortable than the Finn Hawk style hard plastic sheath. The blade has also handled dishwasher trips and deer cleaning without issue. The main knocks are the lack of a hand guard and the sense that it is better for light cutting than stabbing or hard use.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is described as a go-to kitchen knife that stays comfortable, sharpens easily, and keeps an edge through daily use. Multiple comments say it has survived many accidental dishwasher trips over about 8 years and still looks new.

  • It is presented as easier to keep sharp and better for kitchen use, while Morakniv is described as more of a woodcraft/outdoors knife. The Finn Bear is also said to be Chinese-made, so the choice comes down to whether you want a general-purpose kitchen/outdoor blade or a more traditional Mora-style tool.

  • It is a Finnish/puukko-inspired small general-purpose belt knife for woodcraft, hunting, and daily tasks. Practical examples given include cutting fishing bait, slicing apples, pickling, and other light kitchen or camp chores.

  • It can work for hunting tasks and has been used to clean a deer successfully. The blade is described as better for light cutting and general outdoor use than stabbing, so it fits field dressing and similar chores more than heavy-duty camp chopping.

  • No hand guard is mentioned, and the knife is not intended for stabbing use. It is described as a light-duty cutter for bait, fruit, picnic food, and similar tasks rather than a shanking-style blade.

This has become my go-to kitchen knife. It is comfortable, easy-to-sharpen, and perfect for some tasks like pickling because the broad, tear-drop butt is good for tamping vegetable into jars. Best of all, it's easy to take care of. Has survived many accidental trips through my dishwasher and still looks like the day I bought it 8 or so years ago.
The Cold Steel Roach Belly looks like it could be a good kitchen knife too, it's on sale for $14.95.

Midway has a couple other nice Cold Steels on sale.

Voyager $30 - Good camping/hiking knife. Good edc if your local laws allow a 4" blade.

Verdict 4116 $15 - Good inexpensive edc/work blades.

I like Cold Steel, they do a very good job at heat treating their steel.

Not that kind of knife. This is more so to cut fishing bait or apple slices when you're having a picnic. If you're asking for murder weapon/shanking style knives, way better options out there
all knives should be shanking knives! I can cut an apple with a push dagger !

Good info thanks.

On another note, I don't know if that's your dog (guessing it's a composite image), but if that is really what your dog looks like, for the love of all that's holy put that thing down and send it back to hell whence it came.

Society and little children will be safer and God will thank you for it. Big Grin
Lol -not my dog. It's face just matches my mood sometimes. I think it might be ai - but these days, what isn't?

Whew!!!

But now that you mention it, I think it might be the "true" face of AI, which is ruining literally everything it touches.. IMO...

I'm especially sick of youtube videos. It used to be that many were BS, but now it seems like 90% are fictitious BS with a fake person with a fake voice droning on about whatever while never getting to the point....

We've come a long way.... In the wrong direction.... toward the edge of a cliff..... EEK!

You'd be wrong. I've had both for 8+ years and my Morakniv is a major PIA to keep sharp. Air dulls that blade just as fast as usage. My finn bear on the other hand survives daily use in the kitchen, many accidental trips through the dishwasher, takes and keeps and edge easily, and still looks like the day I bought it. I've used the morakniv less than a hundred times and it looks like it's been though a world war - and that's with meticulous oil treatment. Granted - the morakniv is carbon steel so you know what you're getting into. Still, if you calculate value as usage / upkeep, the morakniv gets a 1 out of 10 while my finn bear easily earns a 9 out of 10.
BTW - the reason I use the morakniv so little is that the blade doesn't look food-safe - like it would contribute off-flavors. It looks like a knife that belongs in the bait bucket, not in the kitchen.
Morakniv has a stainless and carbon steel. The carbon one loses edge faster but can be made sharper. The stainless can hold the edge longer, but because of stainless carbides, will not have the sharpest edge between the two with equal sharpening.

Perhaps. But what is the use for shaved hamsters? 400m IM at the local pool? Smilie
