Can't go wrong with a Daiwa Crossfire LT 2000 or 2500 for around $30.
Any cheaper alternatives?

But, don't believe any of those that tell you, you can't just use the stock reel. They are parroting what others on the internet have told them. They fish so little they don't even know what the stock reel can do. It doesn't feel refined, but I've caught hundreds of fish on the stock reel. It never broke. I just put a different reel on since I have a lot of them.
