M5 throttles after about 30 minutes when connected to external monitor streaming 1080p videos + office work.

You get one of the best laptop displays on the market (mini-LED 1600nit HDR), watching movies/youtube/whatever on it is a treat, speakers that are one of the best you'll hear in a laptop (I use mine as a "bluetooth speaker" very often for music). 3 -TB4 USB C ports and a mag safe. If you're lucky with the refurb, also a 140w charger as well. CPU is good enough that it will handle nearly everything you throw at it. GPU in the pro is still decent, although I don't know the capabilities of the Pro VS the Max GPU.
Another thing to add, the M1 (as a CPU) is just as good as it was in 2021. If anyone tells you it's sluggish, they are mistaken and must be on an intel machine. Unless you're doing heavy modern 8k video/heavy VFX/LLMs you will not need more. A few modern games such as Crimson Desert require an M3 or newer due to raytracing, but I'm sure you aren't buying this for brand new AAA gaming. It does work well for stuff like Cyberpunk 2077 however.
Just letting people know from someone who did something similar if they're on the fence. I do not regret my refurb'd MBP one bit. Love the thing.

It had 42 battery cycles at 96% battery health original box and charger (No magsafe cable, no biggie I use USB-C)
Its a very capable machine. No windows alternative can beat its overall package, that's not hyperbole just a fact. speakers are next level, battery life is superb, build quality is unmatched. Only downfall is, it's one. chunky lil boy.
If you buy one today, expect to use it for the next 2-4 years. Those later years you may not get the latest MacOS update(s), but you should be getting security updates for a couple more years.
I purchased mine with that in-mind. $550 for a laptop of this quality and the battery health/life was a no brainer.
I think of it like buying a older used Lexus (albeit low mileage) for the price of a new Corolla (even cheaper than a new Corolla - Macbook NEO). I'm 100% MacOS all day everyday. I have an iphone so I'm ingrained into the "ecosystem". Makes life and work a heck of a lot smoother.
I got mine from a local pawn shop $550 out the door(taxes included). original box and charging brick. 42 battery cycles battery health at 96%.

I couldn't have bought it any faster. It was not a deal you see/get everyday, I know. But just thought I'd chime in that its possible to find them cheap.
FWIW it's still running perfectly today, using today's software. Handles everything I throw at it. I currently have about 7 docker containers running, Firefox/Chrome both with a ton of tabs, a couple of claude/codex sessions, video streaming, and a second monitor hooked up.
I wanted to the upgrade to the M5 Macbook Air, since this Macbook Pro is so heavy and I was tired of carrying it, but I was messing with the 16" Air in the Apple store and it didn't feel much lighter, so I didn't go for the upgrade. I was hoping to get at least $1000 for it when I finally sold it, but it looks like the price has gone below that 🥲
