I have heard mostly negative things about this. Apparently the tines are not high quality and break easily, and they aren't independently powered. One set of tines spin and makes contact with the other set to spin those ones.

Agreed. I think it used to be the thought of what could we safely make in a tool that can save people lots of time and effort. Now it seems the thought process is what else can we make in a cordless tool?

All true, plus the internal gears are plastic and are prone to stripping if pressed. I've been waiting for this to come down to a realistic price for years but can never find it on sale. I have no use for the battery or charger as I already have dozens so the wait continues.

This is the worst tool I've ever purchased from Ryobi. It broke after two uses.

I went through to these last year. They don't last very long. The internal clutches or gears or whatever strip very quickly and the motor will just freely spin without moving the times. I would pass on this thing.

I have one, too. Got it a while back from DTO on sale. All of your suspicions are true, it feels dangerous to use and I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't really last. So far mine has been pretty good. It's handy to use while planting a flower garden, I've found it to be useful. You'll want to devote one battery for outdoor use, I found that a tool like this that is gonna be used while planting tends to get a lot of dirt rammed into the crevasses of the battery. Much more so than the Ryobi saws that I also use. Overall it's been a good tool for me, but I wouldn't want to pay full price for it.

Got this when it was $49.00 .
All those that says it sucks are not using correctly.
yeah it's an overpriced as one really doesn't need it....

BUT, This works great for planter boxes where the soil is NOT like concrete, clay, or your typical dirt. But Where the soil in the planting box is a good mix of planting soil mix, coffee grounds, and regular dirt. I have used this successfully with my 3 foot high planter boxes for the last 1 year or so.
One must use this without placing pressure on the tool and just let the tool work. add water if needed (I haven't yet) .
The one problem i found is that it will sometimes kick the soil in your face. That shield need to be bigger and wider.
