It does get in the way a little but I didn't find it to be a deal breaker. I've got 2 of these.

Awesome knife. Stays sharp for a while and can cut deep into produce and meat without too much resistance.

I own this. Wouldn't recommend.

Wusthof Gourmet is their budget line. I have the Gourmet set.

It's a budget set, not one that will last.

The Wusthof Classic is a forged knife. Increased strength, durability, balance and edge retention.
Wusthof made a name for itself with its high quality german forged steel.

The Wusthof Gourmet is there budget, mass produced stamped steel.

Now if you are a college student, who is going to have roommates that do not know how to take care of knifes, then this might be the purchase for you... but I suspect you can get more bang for your buck on amazon without paying extra for the Wusthof name.

The WIZEKA Kitchen Knife Set with Block: Razor Sharp 15 Pcs Professional Chef Knife Set has a lightning deal for $87 and had amazing reviews on ProjectFarm.

Dexter-Russell 8" Chef's Knife was recommended on chef forums as profession sous chef's work knife. Not flashing but practical.

Both the 6" and 8" Classic Chef's knives are available with a half bolster. So if you are purchasing by the piece instead of in a set, that is not an issue. I didn't find the traditional bolstered knife difficult to sharpen until it turned 30 years old however. It is now significantly harder to sharpen.

The title for this post is wrong. The knife being sold is the Classic, not the Gourmet. They are, as you mentioned, entirely different.

This is possibly the most ambiguous product detail page I've ever seen! Not entirely the OPs fault,as the Sam's Club page is ambiguous, too. Wüsthof has both their Classic line, and their Gourmet line (and also an Ikon line that doesn't enter the picture in this discussion.

The Classic line is quite literally, their classic knife that they've been selling for decades (if not hundreds of years). It says "Wüsthof Classic" on the blade, has the full bolster (the thickness of the blade where it meets the handle), is forged steel so it's heavier and holds a better edge, and is made in Solingen, Germany. On the Wüsthof website, the 6" knife is $135.

The Gourmet line says "Wüsthof Gourmet" on the blade, is stamped steel, made in China (albeit "finished" in Solingen, for whatever that means), and has no bolster. On Wüsthof, the 6" is $80.

The bolster can be a preference thing--they're a little more stiff and resistant to twisting, add a little more "heft" (which some people like, and some people prefer a lighter knife), and have a little better finger protection (since the heel of the knife isn't sharp), but at the same time they're harder to sharpen.

But the title of the Slickdeals post "6" Wusthof Classic Gourmet Chef's Knife" invites controversy. Is it a Classic, or a Gourmet? :-)

From the Sam's Club page, the photo shows the Classic and says it's made in Solingen which make me think it's the Classic, but due to the whole "finished" thing it's a little ambiguous--heck, as you can see from the pictures even the Gourmet blade is marked "Made in Solingen" (which is, IMHO, false advertising). On the other hand, the Sam's Club page also specifically says that it's "Precision-stamped" which means Gourmet. The $85 list price is closer to the Gourmet than the Classic, but Sam's Club wouldn't sell for MORE than list, would they?!

So which one is it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Your guess is as good as mine!

Personally, though, I've had a 6" Classic for over 35 years now--my Mom bought it for me for my 21st birthday, and it's by far my favorite knife out of all of mine. It's got great balance and, to me, it is a perfect cross between a little bit of heft for control, but still light and short enough to be a breeze to wield. keeps a great edge when sharpened, and is easy to clean--yes (gasp) I've always put mine through the dishwasher (in the knife area), and it's still in perfect condition all this time later. I just bought my eldest a Classic set since she graduated from college and moved out on her own. It didn't have a 6" Chef's Knife, though, so I'm seriously considering jumping on this deal for her and keeping it around until this Christmas!

Anyway, if you need a great knife (and don't dislike the full bolster), it's a heck of a deal...if they send you a Classic. If they send you a Gourmet, I'd return it. If you don't like the bolster, then personally I'd go with the Zwilling Pro (which is what my full set is, including a 8" Chef's knife that is fabulous...but I prefer the 6" Wüsthof because I actually like the bolster and smaller size).
