This Midea 12,000 BTU smart inverter window air conditioner is praised for strong cooling, quiet operation, and efficient power use, with smart app energy tracking on some units. Installation is usually described as manageable, though the unit is heavy and may take two people, and it works well for bedrooms and other single rooms. The main cautions are the earlier mold recall history, occasional drain plug and energy reporting quirks, and possible breaker trips on crowded circuits. It is a solid fit when you want window AC performance without portable AC noise.

Common Questions (6)

  • Warehouse pricing is commonly reported around $299-$300, while online pricing is higher because of shipping. Several comments also mention past seasonal drops to about $199-$125, so the best price often comes later in the season or in-store.

  • Yes. It is repeatedly described as very quiet and more efficient than portable units because the compressor sits outside the window and it uses inverter tech. Several comments also note it can cool bedrooms and larger rooms effectively, though very hot rooms may make it run nearly nonstop.

  • The model number matches the recalled line, but the updated units are described as having a redesigned drain plug and being fixed after the recall. Some owners report years of use with the recall repair kit and no mold issues afterward.

  • When the room is already cool, it can draw roughly 200-600 watts, with peak draw around 1,000-1,200 watts when the room is hot or it is struggling to keep up. That makes it efficient for normal cycling, but it can still trip a weak or overloaded circuit.

  • Installation is generally described as manageable but heavy, often taking about an hour and sometimes needing two people to lift. The included instructions cover both lipped and non-lipped windows, and several people recommend following YouTube guides for the easiest setup.

  • Yes, if the circuit cannot handle its peak draw. It usually runs below its maximum, but comments note that older AFCI breakers or heavily loaded circuits can trip, while a dedicated or updated circuit often solves the problem.

All I can tell you is these were amazing. I thought they were my forever air conditioners I had three of them. They all worked with my smart home setup. They were so quiet and easy to install. You could close the window almost all the way. Then I bought a new home with all awning windows. I had to get mini splits. Obviously those are much better but if they're not an option for you this is the next best thing.
Do the bracket arms need to be screwed in? The videos show they do, but the instructions don't explicitly mention it.

Nice system, it is quite..but still struggle to keep my master's bedroom 14x14 cool during Florida's heat wave. It would run almost nonstop, I have the ceiling fan on also.

how long did it take you to do the install?
Mine took me about an hour but I went steadily. There are a couple of good YouTube videos to follow vs the written instructions. It will probably need two people to lift (I did it myself but its pretty darn heavy to deadlift lol)

Midea 12,000 BTU Smart Inverter Window Air Conditioner with MShield on sale for $330 online. I bought it today in-store for $300 in chicago,IL. Check out your local costco for a similar price. It's not hot yet, so I cannot give a review since I haven't used it.

Dont buy at this price. If enough people report the false advertising to Costco, they might bring the online price down to the advertised
I don't think it's false advertising. I think the extra $30 they charge is to cover their shipping costs. It's pretty big and heavy. I guess you could call it a laziness tax for people who don't want to transport it to their house themselves. It's $299 in my warehouse and my power company will give me a $50 rebate. For $249 + tax it's a tempting deal.

Do these need a special outlet or will any standard one work? We have one AC in our apartment in the living room and it does not cool our bedrooms, interested in getting one for my room.

I own this exact model and it's very good. I would buy this again if mine failed
If you like this one you should definitely try the heat pump version. That's my favorite.

this is a great A/Cthere is only one problem and it's huge after awhilethe blower fan is nearly impossible to clean
I used a steam cleaner with vinegar/water mix. But only after I used a mold cleaning spray that is supposed to be eco friendly. I can't remember the name

I have had both the 12k and 8k btu versions of this for the past 5+ years and they still work great. Got the recall repair kits to let these drain properly and no mold issues anymore.

By the way, the ad featured the price as $300 +online. False advertising
Given that you have complained about the online price twice in this thread.
Costco does their monthly savings booklet that has save this much xx.xx on said product, without always listing the actual price. Been this way for years, people always complain when the booklet is posted here. Nothing new. Its due to regional pricing fluctuations.
This item is listed in the coupon book as saving $100 at the top of the description and to the right has the +online. That means you'll save $100 on the item online as well. Some items at the bottom of the description show a WAREHOUSE price and the discount and final price some items do not. This item clearly says at the bottom WAREHOUSE PRICE, THE DISCOUNT, AND THE FINAL PRICE!! AT THE WAREHOUSE!
It does not simply list a price and discount nor say warehouse and online.
I understand this can be complicated for some, I'm just trying to help you not make needless uninformed posts here and elsewhere. Costcos online prices have always been generally higher due to shipping cost, and that helps keep the better prices in the warehouse for its members. I prefer to keep it that way, rather than have warehouse prices get bumped up to help online sales.
Side note. Home Depot is selling this item for $480 when I last checked. So this is a good deal for those looking for something like this. I will be upgrading my 8000btu to this one.
