This Midea 12,000 BTU smart inverter window air conditioner is praised for strong cooling, quiet operation, and efficient power use, with smart app energy tracking on some units. Installation is usually described as manageable, though the unit is heavy and may take two people, and it works well for bedrooms and other single rooms. The main cautions are the earlier mold recall history, occasional drain plug and energy reporting quirks, and possible breaker trips on crowded circuits. It is a solid fit when you want window AC performance without portable AC noise.

Common Questions (6)

  • Warehouse pricing is commonly reported around $299-$300, while online pricing is higher because of shipping. Several comments also mention past seasonal drops to about $199-$125, so the best price often comes later in the season or in-store.

  • Yes. It is repeatedly described as very quiet and more efficient than portable units because the compressor sits outside the window and it uses inverter tech. Several comments also note it can cool bedrooms and larger rooms effectively, though very hot rooms may make it run nearly nonstop.

  • The model number matches the recalled line, but the updated units are described as having a redesigned drain plug and being fixed after the recall. Some owners report years of use with the recall repair kit and no mold issues afterward.

  • When the room is already cool, it can draw roughly 200-600 watts, with peak draw around 1,000-1,200 watts when the room is hot or it is struggling to keep up. That makes it efficient for normal cycling, but it can still trip a weak or overloaded circuit.

  • Installation is generally described as manageable but heavy, often taking about an hour and sometimes needing two people to lift. The included instructions cover both lipped and non-lipped windows, and several people recommend following YouTube guides for the easiest setup.

  • Yes, if the circuit cannot handle its peak draw. It usually runs below its maximum, but comments note that older AFCI breakers or heavily loaded circuits can trip, while a dedicated or updated circuit often solves the problem.

I installed this just last weekend, and that was a refurb one from Walmart - $259.99. They had a prior issue with the drain plug that had to be replaced, so that's really the only refurb aspect - and the plugs have been changed to a different design.
The unit itself so far has been great. I got mine for my master bed/bathroom at nighttime so I don't have to run the whole house (downstairs as always is a lot cooler than upstairs). Tested a few times and it worked great for the space I have.
were you able to add the allstate warranty?

It had a one year Midea warranty included and 30 day free returns.

It's about 17 inches on the outside part. You should have at least some additional clearance further than that I would imagine so it has good airflow.
The window guard is wrought iron so it wont restrict airflow. I only have a little over 12" from the window to the guard so it seems that this wouldn't fit. I was reading that the support bracket is 17" but the unit itself is shorter - I don't need the support bracket as I have very deep window sills. Can you confirm this measurement is definitely the exterior condensing portion only? Thanks in advance!

Hi. I measured the actual outside part of the unit, and it protrudes 11-12 inches from the window itself. The condenser itself it almost exactly 11", but there is a space of about 1/2"-1" between the condenser and the window itself which is part of the plastic support (not the brackets).

It tries to draw what it needs and has no way of knowing the capacity of your circuit, so if it exceeds the capacity, it will trip the breaker. Most of the time, the unit is drawing well below its rating, so if the 8,000 works the 12,000 will probably be OK (it would have been helpful if you posted the size of the single breaker). This is Costco, so if it doesn't work out, you can always return it. FWIW, a toaster, blower dryer, and microwave are all high wattage devices. A toaster and microwave running simultaneously on the same circuit in a modern home will probably trip the breaker.
Thank you so much for the response. I think the breaker is 15 Amps? I missed that deal, but ended up getting a used 12,000 btu with the upgrade kit from Midea and I've had no problems so far. Thank you again!

I think the 12000 can draw upwards of 1000 watts so that's really pushing it on one circuit. I have a small bedroom with lots of electronics and I didn't want to push the power too much either so I bought the smallest 6000 BTU unit from Amazon and that seems to max out around 500 watts but often it pulls lower (right now it's pulling about 240 watts but we're not at the peak of summer yet). The 6000 unit is not as good a deal as this 12000 BTU unit but if you are power constricted then I would consider it.
Thank you for the response. My old 8000 btu Frigidaire was probably 10 yrs old so it probably drew as much as the new 12000 Midea is drawing now. I ended up getting one and have had no problems so far. Thank you again!

Hard to know without knowing the 8K units draw. Like if it's older or not an inverter unit then the 12k may pull similar wattage. From looking online it seems like when the room is to temp, this should only pull 2-600 watts of electricity (your microwave is probably 1500-1800), instead of it's max of about 1200 watts. However if the room is hot or it isn't keeping up, it would possibly pull up to 1200 watts.
