Longest range are on the GMRS-only channels.
Plus, claiming a range of 16 miles is absurd. On GMRS walkie-talkies like this, it's more like 3-4 miles.

We tried these on a carnival Cruise. When both sides were on the same level we were able to do about half the ship. If one of the two was a few decks down it was completely useless.

Yeah 16 miles is mountain top to mountain top on a clear day, not in the real world.
with that said, 3-4 miles for a pair of $17 walkies is still impressive

If getting these for kids I would suggest the rechargeable option. It looks like the two cheaper options require batteries.

Does anyone know how these would work on a cruise ship?

It's highly advisable to anyone using any radio type that they remember range is (almost) entirely dependent upon topography (i.e. line of sight). Unless you're able to broadcast 50W+, wattage is irrelevant. For example, if you're able to program a GMRS radio it's advisable to set it to low power (e.g. 2.5W) for battery savings. Using a higher output will make no difference to range. Line of sight >>>>> wattage.

TLDR (for the layman): Posted range of a radio is entirely marketing. Considering your surroundings.

Device.report and bhphoto both list this as 2W. I can't find any documentation from Motorola to confirm this. They may mean up to 2 watts, the current standard, even though the radio may still meet the old standard of 0.5W.

Best use for backing up a trailer in the camp ground instead of the wife shouting.
