Wouldn't the Costco u-shaped be a better buy for just $20 more? (in store)

Agree. If u-shaped version from costco fits then it is a better buy in terms of install being cleaner

I went back to the regular window AC because the original U Shaped was recalled due to mold.

They've since fixed it by putting either a bracket or shims in the box (didn't really pay attention) but it scared me off until the tech is better or they do an actual revision.

My AC doesn't need to look clean where it's installed or that may sway me to the U Shaped but I bought the 8000 of this from BJ's and it's been rock solid.

Any window unit that doesn't drain properly will have mold, including the one you replaced it with.

I had two of the original design U-shaped Midea units when I lived in south Texas (read: hot and humid), and I installed them at a slight angle so condensation would flow away from the house as specified in the instructions and I never had a problem with mold after using them for 3+ years. Lucky, I guess? I did have a paper towel folded lengthwise in a one inch strip that I would tuck in between the frame and the radiator fins and let dangle to wick up excess moisture and drip onto the ground. No hole drilling needed.

I had either this 12000 or an 8000 btu version of this but ended up getting the 12000 btu U from Costco instead last year - both are very quiet but I prefer the better outside noise isolation of the U plus it's easier to install in the same window - I BARELY had 14.5" vertical opening and had to kind of cram this one into place.

Sealing the units comes with their own unique problem. The side curtains are a little more straightforward to seal with tape and foam board but it just looks ugly. The U is more of a pain in the butt to properly seal underneath and between the window bracket as well as small gaps between the unit and plastic fold-down arms.

Anyway, buy whatever one is cheaper or works best for your setup.
