Looks like the top section (colorway) is basically one of those packaway backpack sections, ie superthin material with no padding. It will be rolled up and packed into the backside of the fannypack section. You can see the inside of the fanny if you look at the pictures from other color variations.

Interesting idea. Obviously not for laptop or use as a book bag, but has potential for travel and such with a few constant items and then keeping convertible backpack space to add a jacket when you take it off, etc.
