RAM is about 30% faster on M5 and GPU is 30% faster. For local LLM fans AI models could be 3.5x to 4x faster. Base CPU is 20% faster. WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 - all that make M5 worth the extra money. (Both base chips are TB4 - only M5 pro and above is TB 5).

I too can copy and paste AI slop into a comment form.

Probably ram will have a more limiting factor in the coming years, depending on use case.

Community Reviews

This 13.6 inch MacBook Air stands out as a strong everyday laptop with 24GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD, which makes it especially appealing for students, heavy multitasking, and future proofing. The extra RAM is the main draw here, since it cannot be upgraded later and helps with browser tabs, Xcode or Android Studio, virtual machines, and some light local AI work. Costco also adds protection perks and an extra warranty. The main tradeoff is that the newer M5 alternatives offer faster chip features for only a bit more, while this listing has already sold out in some colors.

People running local AI models or VMs on a portable laptop, because 24GB can fit larger models and memory is the main bottleneck.
Zen7777777 Zen7777777 Zen7777777 malefactor
Students and office workers who keep lots of tabs open, because 24GB RAM helps avoid swapping as apps and browser use grow over time.
ElatedMaid483 hans007 pianistat
Average everyday laptop buyers who want a long-lasting machine, because this configuration is described as enough for regular tasks for years.
mookieprime gregular-calif
Students and hobby coders using Xcode or Android Studio with an emulator, because 24GB can keep the IDE and emulator running without heavy swapping.
hans007

People who want the newest chip for AI acceleration, because the M5 offers higher memory bandwidth and faster local model performance.
Zen7777777 Player001 Player001 pianistat
People expecting a laptop for sustained local LLM work, because the Air can run too hot and throttle under long loads.
kdb777 domain Zen7777777
Light users who only browse, email, and do Zoom calls, because 24GB is overkill for those workloads.
slimdunkin117 pianistat
Buyers who need a machine that can be upgraded later, because the RAM cannot be added after purchase.
MagentaEducation252

The 24GB unified memory configuration can fit larger local model sizes and reduce swapping pressure versus 16GB setups.
MagentaEducation252 Player001 Zen7777777 domain
The newer M5 platform can provide better long-term AI readiness when paired with higher unified memory.
Player001 domain Player001
The Costco purchase can add extra protection perks beyond the out-of-the-box student-friendly configuration.
gregular-calif krizzz
The deal can work well for everyday tasks and can be sufficient for regular needs for years.
mookieprime slimdunkin117

The deal can become unavailable or increase in price quickly, which reduces the value of waiting.
aznmnky92 HowDoUTurnThisOn SarahPier85
The Air can run too hot for sustained local LLM workloads and may throttle during long runs.
kdb777 domain
Local LLM performance can be limited by context window size, and small windows can drive hallucinations.
Zen7777777 Zen7777777
The Costco additional 1-year warranty may not stack additively with AppleCare, so coverage overlap may not extend beyond the AppleCare term.

Common Questions (5)

The M4 24GB is the better pick if you care about memory-heavy work, local AI, VMs, or keeping more browser tabs open because 24GB cannot be upgraded later. The M5 16GB has newer chip features and faster bandwidth, but 16GB can become the limit sooner for multitasking and larger models.
ratbastard shk1020 Zen7777777 ElatedMaid483
24GB can handle some local models, including roughly 17B parameter models at Q4 for basic work, but the Air is not ideal for sustained local LLM use because heat and throttling become issues. It works better for occasional demos or travel use than for a dedicated AI machine.
Zen7777777 Zen7777777 domain Zen7777777
Yes, the 24GB/512GB configuration is a strong out-of-the-box student setup and should cover everyday tasks for years. It is also described as overkill for average users, so the extra RAM mainly matters if you expect heavier multitasking or future-proofing.
mookieprime slimdunkin117 gregular-calif pianistat
No, some color options are already gone, and the listing later appears to have sold out. The deal was also reported as dead and about $50 higher than the prior day.
HowDoUTurnThisOn SarahPier85 aznmnky92
The Costco extra year can add coverage, but AppleCare does not stack as extra years the way older third-party plans sometimes did. AppleCare effectively runs its own 3-year term, so if you want AppleCare, it should be bought with that structure in mind rather than assuming additive coverage.
