This Cold Steel three piece Japanese knife set is positioned as a handsome Seki City, Japan made VG10 Damascus trio, with praise for the steel, the hammered look, and the handforged build. The set is also seen as a strange value point, since VG10 Damascus is described as mostly cosmetic at this price and the trio is compared unfavorably with cheaper Shun and Miyabi options. The unusual mix of santoku, gyuto, and petty, along with the dark burl handles and blade pattern, makes the appeal narrow. A better fit for buyers who care about the look and origin as much as the cutting performance.
Collectors who want a Japanese-made showpiece, because the hammered finish and Damascus pattern make it visually striking.
Value-focused cooks comparing working kitchen knives, because the price is described as too high for performance and cheaper comparable sets are suggested.
Buyers who want a straightforward working knife set, because the unusual mix of blade shapes and decorative styling is described as too strange for practical use.
The set is widely viewed as expensive for a working knife trio: VG-10 Damascus adds cosmetics more than performance, and comparable Japanese sets are cited at roughly half the price. It may make sense only if you specifically want the Seki City hand-forged look and are paying for aesthetics as much as cutting performance.
Yes. They are described as handforged in Seki City, Japan, which is a legitimate knife-making region, though that alone does not settle whether the $916 price is justified.
VG-10 is a solid semi-stainless steel, but the Damascus pattern is described as mainly cosmetic rather than a performance upgrade. At this price, a harder carbon-steel core would be preferred for a thinner, sharper working edge.
Some Japanese lines use an offset bevel, which can make sharpening more complex and can bias the blade the wrong way for left-handed users. A normal hand-sharpened edge is still possible, but the bevel design can make professional sharpening harder.
I'd think one would be better off with a comparable Shun set for half the cost:

Evidently I don't know how to paste links. SD ... I remember when it was cool.
Its dropped even further to $825. But that's so much for knives of completely unknown quantity from an unknown brand with zero reviews on a site full of fake products. I wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole. Buy expensive knives from a reputable store like cutleryandmore.
Knife guy here...yea price is a little high. Seki is a legit knife making region though. I prefer Sakai. Its a beautiful hammered knife. VG10 is great, most people don't want to deal with rusting shiro or aogami anyways. Very nice looking knife either way. I would say worth it only if you know the knife maker is upper to top tier. Otherwise, check other outlets. One canadian online store currently has their semi-annual sale going on now.
Thanks, couldn't see myself spending this kind of money on damascus
I have been using Japanese knives and Western-style knives for decades. Then I switched to Chinese cleavers. I'm not going back to Japanese or Western knives. Once you learn the proper technique of the Chinese cleaver, you really only need 2 for the entire kitchen. Vegetable and bone cleaver; well, maybe a tiny knife for your fruit or steak.
To be fair Chinese knives are designed in an "one size fits all" purpose where Japanese knives are intended to be specialized for specific purpose.
Knives in this price range are chosen equally for aesthetics and performance. Personally, I do not like the dark burl handles and weird blade pattern, so this is a non-starter at any price.
Secondly, this is an unusual set. Normally, knife-en-ados would choose either the santuko or the gyoto, but not both. I also prefer a shorter petty knife - this one is a little long.
Third, a strange price point. Really excellent working Japanese knives would be about $750 for the trio. Special knives would start at about twice that. So, way too much for a working knife, way too little for a premium knife. An 8" Ken Onion chef's knife with Damascus cladding, for example, is $450 and, while excellent, is not yet in the artisan class. Cold Steel is not making these knives; they are just marketing them. But to whom? Too expensive for anyone who knows little about knives. Too cheap and too strange-looking for those who do know something about knives.

If I were to buy a "Western brand of made in Japan knives" I would go with Zwillings Miyabi line
I can't imagine spending that kind of money for a mass produced amazon item with a sku when I know of at least two nerds who make the things by hand locally.

Just one thing to be aware of on Shun knives is that most of their line uses and offset bevel even in more western shapes, i.e. the peak of the blade is not in the center. This has two drawback for all but huge enthusiast users:
1.) Sharpening is way more complex and easy to screw up. Even finding a professional to sharpen it will be more difficult.
2.) For a left handed user, it will be biased in the wrong direction and make things worse.

whether that makes them worth $916 is certainly up for debate...
