I have the m4 pro version with exact specs and it was a massive* upgrade from my M1 Pro 16gb. I can run some nice local models, and this one is even faster with the m5 pro. I think it's great if you need a laptop and want to get into local llms for a 'reasonable' price

This 14 inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro, 48GB RAM, and 1TB SSD stands out as a strong portable machine for local LLMs, dev work, and number crunching. The M5 Pro is described as fast enough for casual local models, including Gemma 4 and other MoE models, and the 48GB and 1TB balance is framed as a practical middle ground. The main hesitation is memory headroom, since heavier agentic coding and larger models are said to benefit from 64GB or more. B and H return policy concerns also make it worth being certain about the exact configuration before ordering.

  • The M5 Pro configuration can run local MoE models at around 55-60 tokens per second for interactive use.

    Caleo

  • The 48GB RAM and 1TB SSD setup can be sufficient for casual local LLM use with Gemma 4.

    hinchy

  • The laptop can support number-crunching workflows using Python ML libraries like pandas, numpy, torch, and XGBoost.

    honvl

  • Apple customer service can help with a price match and cash-back stacking to reduce the effective cost.

    wolverine88

  • 48GB RAM may be insufficient for agentic coding with local LLMs using meaningful context sizes.

    DTroy

  • 48GB RAM may not be enough for some users' needs, especially for heavier AI workloads.

    whatgooddeal

  • B&H may not accept laptop returns, so buyers need to confirm the exact model before purchasing.

    McWetty

  • 64GB on a Pro model may still not deliver tolerable speed for fast, interactive local LLM use.

You want a fast, interactive local LLM → 64GB on Pro won't deliver this. You need M5 Max (+~$500–700 more) for tolerable speed.
Lol, M5 Pro can run some of the best available local MoE models (qwen3.5:35b-a3b and gemma4:26b-a4b) around 55-60 tokens/second which is plenty fast.

Might as well go to 64gb ram. Even if you won't use it all this minute, you will in a few months. AI loves RAM and literally everything is moving from human execution to AI execution while tokens are going to be increasingly rationed.

MC just did a 15% off Macs today. They have a 14" M5 Pro 18/20 core with 24Gb and 2Tb for $2239. And the same build but 48Gb and 1Tb for $2379. More RAM or more SSD? Hmm.
More RAM any day. You can use cloud drives or even external SSD for extra storage if you need, but you can't do the same with RAM later!

What tests and measurements have you performed to reach this conclusion? Or are you just blowing smoke?
no need to test. if LLM file size is already over 40GB, then there's no point.

He is right. If you're planning to use it for agentic coding with local llms 48 gigs is not enough when using 3.6 or gemma 4 dense models with any meaningful context size. 64 would be sweet spot for those models
source: I have 48Gb m4 pro
correct.
But i would say 64GB is barely enough to do anything useful.
128GB is the minimum.
