An ode to Simply Protein bars

I do find these quite tasty
(though others find them dry)
I actually like them quite a lot
But they make me fart 'til I cry

I bought these recently and they are pretty good. The macros are quite good - 160 calories for 13 grams of protein. I will continue to consume them. However, they are a bit dry and a tad bland. Trubars for example are tastier (Sam's Club has these for a great price and the Strawberry Shorty Got Cake is amazing), but they are slightly higher calories and slightly less protein than these. For the macros and the cost of $1/bar, these are good and I recommend them. Just don't expect these to be the most amazing bars you have every tasted.

I actually liked that these bars aren't as dessert'y and overly sweet as a lot of other bars. I'll take a touch "bland" over zomg sugarbomb or artificial-sweet-aftertaste-bomb. I also appreciated that I wasn't stomach'ing super-dense sticky greasy bars.

In terms of taste, my fav is probably the Powercrunch bars, even though they are a tad more sweet than I'd like.

My favorite protein bar. Costco stopped carrying them in my area. They're not dense and heavy like most protein bars.

  1. They've been on sale quite a bit at $13.29, about a week each month, just purely FYI.
  2. I wouldn't put the Micros in the great category, maybe slightly above mediocre. For Vegans probably it's decent considering the limitations.
  3. The 13g of protein are probably only 60-70% digestible because of the crisping (Maillard reactions tie up some of the amino acids).
  4. Some of the marketing is giving a false narrative by NOT providing details (the 2g of sugar is actually 2g of ADDED sugar) the TOTAL absorbed carbohydrates (Glycemic impact) per bar is between 11-13g (depending on how you want to count Glycerin, with it's minimal Glycemic impact).
  5. Those "Farts" or GI issues are due to the increased type of Fiber from Inulin.

Anyone looking for an alternative (YMMV and still Vegan Friendly) I'd suggest IQ Bars. IQ reads more like food, Simply Protein reads more like a formulated bar that happens to be edible.

I have no affiliation with any company/product, just some random guy that does a LOT of research because why not.
