If you're new to Mountain Hardwear, just know the quality of this isn't representative of the overall quality of the brand. This is certainly an entry level offering from them so don't base your opinion off all their gear from this item. This sale price is what the normal retail price should be for a jacket like this with limited features and non-technical materials.

What makes this piece non-technical?

So if we aren't super keen on the style, should we just buy North Face or Columbia or something, or is there a reason for this jacket to exist?

I'd say this jacket exists to find a place on the racks at places like REI for brand awareness and a price point made to sell when on sale or for the REI Chads who don't know any better. For $200, there are many nicer and more technical jackets from all brands. At $70, it's worth getting if you need a simple limited feature jacket. I mean, it is what it is. If you need a jacket and you like it, get it.

All I'm saying is MHW makes a universe of excellent cutting-edge products and this is low on that list. There are many Mountain Hardwear "base model" items (coats, shirts, pants, packs and gear) at REI, while the MHW website sells the full featured version of the same general design, albeit more expensive.

It's a lightweight, straight cut jacket, with only 50D polyester fabric and polyester fill. One snag on a thorn or twig and the loose weave will start to unravel. There is no DWR coating or anything that will make the water repellent in the least bit. The baffles are on the larger size and they aren't fully closed so the filling is going to eventually move around and possibly gather up in clumps. The hood has no drawstrings, so wind will blow it off your head, nor are there cinch cords on the hood to tighten up around a hat or helmet, only elastic around the edges. Same with the cuffs - there is no velcro or snaps or anything to tighten the cuffs at your wrists. Again, wind and the elements blow right up your arms. Same with the waist - no cinch cord to tighten around your waist or hips. Again the wind will blow right up your torso. The pockets have no zippers, only snap enclosures, so do you really want to keep worrying about your keys, phone, money, documents, etc, falling out of your pockets? Also, snaps are a pain to deal with when wearing gloves, and they fail easily from dirt or snow packing in the grooves. A zippered chest pocket, but really, who uses that for heavier items. The jacket is reversible so that means there are no stash pockets or other interior features, and the tag and hang loop will be on the outside. Plus, this thing is on the heavy side - almost 21 ounces, close to 1.5 pounds dry! Imagine walking around the in the cold mist or rain! The more I write, the more I realize this thing is terrible! The closeout sale price here should be the normal retail price.

I just bought this jacket mostly to wear as a mid layer under a good quality 3 layer rain jacket such as a Patagonia Torrentshell, Outdoor Research Foray or Mountain Hardwear Threshold.

This combination makes for a great winter coat here in Chicago.

Most insulated jackets only have 60 or 80 grams of insulation.

This jacket has 100 grams of Primaloft Black so it should be very warm under said 3 layer rain jackets.

By itself, it's nice looking but I wouldn't wear it on snowy or rainy days without a rain jacket over it. Perfectly fine for cool fall and Spring days as long as it's dry outside.

I'm 5'10", 200 lbs. XL fits perfect.

XL for 5'10" 200 lbs sounds too much. Are you sure L doesn't fit?

I'm taking Wegovy pills now to lose some weight but I have somewhat of an athletic build.
No way a large will fit as it would be skin tight. In addition, I would almost always be wearing a hoodie or long sleeves underneath this jacket anyhow so I'd rather have it a bit loose fitting.
