I would take a degraded speed over no signal every time. I use mine to extend out into the back yard to an outdoor smart plug that I can turn the pool pump and hanging lights on and off with through an app on my phone. Speed is of absolutely zero concern to me. That said, I bought this exact model back in February for $14.99. I think this is just the regular price now.
