lens is terrible in low light conditions with that aperture range. would have to have really good ambient lighting, an additional flash, or or high iso which would make photos look bad. many better lenses out there at f/2.8 or even lower than that -but you do have to pay a premium price. the $299.95 spent on this "sale" of this lens could be spent better even buying 3rd party lenses. I'd recommend looking at manufacturers like Tamron for a more cost efficient lens.

Would be good as a basic kit lens though

Nobody would say no to a wider aperture range, but shooting at smaller apertures is really not bad, especially with OIS and how well a lot of cameras do at high ISO. It's also one of the smaller lenses available, so I could see this working well for every day and travel.
