Herein lies the problem with this deal. The PS4 handled the base game okay enough (and I played the hell out of it) but the DLC was PS5 (and eventually PC) only so there is no chance of playing it with a PS4 version.
I don't know if Sony is still doing the cheap PS5 upgrade thing, but that's how people would handle this deal in the past. Buy the PS4 and do a digital PS5 upgrade for like $10 or something. Then you get it running better and the ability to get the DLC.
As far as the game goes I definitely enjoyed it a ton and it improved on the original with gameplay mechanisms out the wazoo. I do agree though that the story can drag a little bit but I think it's mainly due to just how amazing the first one's story and narrative was. You can't catch lightning in a bottle twice, but they do really try to expand on the Zero Dawn mystery and circumstances.
The first is one of my favourite games ever made and I keep this one pretty close to it, but will always fire up the first for a playthrough before tackling this again.

I agreed. It felt like just sloshing through more of the same from the first game, there was no more drive to explore and figure things out. Plus the intro area took so long, I started to lose interest before the game even started.

If you are a fan of the narrative and the world that has been created then the DLC definitely provides a more expanded look on what's happened and gives more information on what's to come, I guess.
I think the world the DLC is in is very interesting but it suffers from a lack of characters (it's really just one group) so some of it is emptier (some area of the map serve no purpose) Still, cauldrons, collectibles, and some new twists on enemies make it worth a playthrough or two.

I liked it better than the first one (except the melee pits). I found the characters more authentic and the storytelling better. Gameplay is mostly the same with a few upgrades and new baddies. I will say, though, that there were a few surprise moments in this one that took my breath away - core memories now.

After you buy the PS4 version (from mobile app or web browser), go to the PS Store on the PS5 and lookup Horizon Forbidden West. The CrossGen version should have a button that says 'Free' (typically where the Download button is located). Just click that. Else, it may be possible that you have to click the '...' button and choose 'View Product' and get the PS5 version from there. But it worked perfectly for me last week; no issues.
