Edit: According to FellaTee in a later comment, disabling firmware updates is important as well if you're planning to use aftermarket toner. Quote:
"Make sure to disable auto-updates to the firmware and any other other auto installs on brother lasers.
On many brother printers to disable firmware updates navigate to the printer's settings menu, then to Machine Info, and finally to Firmware Auto Check, where you can select "Off" to disable automatic updates. This prevents the printer from automatically searching for and installing new firmware versions that may block 3rd party toners.
Here's a step-by-step guide:
Access the printer's menu: Press the "Tools" icon on the printer's control panel.
Navigate to Machine Info: Select "All Settings" and then "Machine Info".
Disable Firmware Auto Check: Select "Firmware Auto Check" and then choose "Off" to disable automatic updates."
Thanks FellaTee for this important additional info to assist buyers.
Unless you duplex scan everyday, it's not a deal breaker. Most home office type do not have duplex scanner. It will add bulk to your printer too.

Thanks. I have to always check for that.
$30 for 3,000 pages of black on eBay off-brand toner
With my current Brother inkjet:
$4 for 500 pages of black on eBay
I guess that's cost competitive and isn't 10 years old, so it'll stop jamming!

BUT the worst part is the ship the printer in a generic one size fits all box. The printer was bouncing around in it because the printer and foam surround was smaller in all dimensions that the interior of the box. I couldn't believe it, but this is Normal for all brother refurbs. They won't return unless defective, to which I said GFY.
Kept the printer, works great. Lack of duplex scanning isn't as big a deal as I thought
This lloks like a good deal for color laser. I have a Brother B/W all in one refurb unit that works great. Honestly I've never even used the scanner
