Possibly the greatest American Songwriter, by my estimates. I can't think of another artist wholse hits span over over 3 to 4 decades.

I dig Tom Petty a lot. On a whim I decided to see his last tour even though my schedule was crazy at the time. Man, I sure was glad I didn't miss that last chance to see him. Crazy to think he's been gone for nearly 9 years now.

As for artists with hits that span over decades, I think Nile Rodgers has written and co-written hits over 6 decades as well as provided a lot of the foundation for hip hop.

I don't think it was his last one.. but it was towards the end that I finally saw him. I dragged my brother and he left saying "I didn't realize how many Tom Petty song I love"

Interesting side note, he and the Heartbreakers were the backing studio band on some of the Johnny Cash American recordings.

He could still be alive and the NYT still wouldn't include him in their list of the top 30 USA songwriters

As a huge Ton Petty fan - he's actually my favorite artist - it pains me too disagree but Bob Dylan definitely takes that crown. There's a reason he won a Nobel Prize.

Name hits from the 80's and 90's that were constantly on the radio and everyone knows. Dylan wrote magic in the 60's but his magic did not hold up over the decades like Petty.

Now, you are changing the argument to most played songs. That's something different altogether. Dylan won numerous awards the 80s and 90s. Critical acclaim better equates to greatness than airplay does. Either way, both are great songwriters and deserve the praise they get. We often times lose that in the endeavor to name the "greatest" in a highly subjective conversation such as this.

No, he's pretty overrated, really. A few good 70's songs and then had a 90's parade of lameness, which was a nice money grab for him.

Again, like Petty, most of Rodgers' great writing was in the 70's/80's. (The 1st decade.) Overall the Rodgers' catalog does dwarf Petty's, I agree. But regardless of "who is the best songwriter", there is just not much evidence "the great songwriting skill" can last more than a single decade. Maybe Barry Gibb, Prince, and McCartney pushed it a bit more than their peers.

One of the best songwriters. Amazing list of tons of hits. Most bands had 1 to 3 hit songs. But bands like Bruce & Petty just kept turning out more and more great songs. Bruce & Petty both had 27 hits on Billboard top 100. Not too shabby.
