Would these been good for making a Corsi-Rosenthal Box? I've been wanting to try one out for a few years, but Merv 13 20x20x2 4-packs are just too expensive after 2020.

Get the 20"x20" size and tape it onto box fan for a poor man HEPA air cleaner.

Yes, I am running two of them right now with similar filters. They last about 6 months before you need to rebuild them. Pro tip, save the box they come in to use for the build and pair it with a smart plug.

Is there a preferred box fan for use or any will do?

This will work but 20"x20"x2" MERV 13 filters are more ideal for Corsi‑Rosenthal boxes. Air flow will be restricted with 4"

Just so you know, larger or thicker AC air filters (such as 4-5 inch filters) generally do not restrict airflow more than thin (1-inch) filters; in fact, they usually improve airflow and reduce strain. That's physics. It is the higher MERV rating that makes it more restrictive.

This doesn't make sense to me. Can you elaborate? A 4" filter is going to have more surface area than a 2" filter, isn't it?

Thicker filters can reduce pressure drop in HVAC systems because those blowers are designed for high static pressure. But a Corsi‑Rosenthal box uses a box fan, which performs very differently. With a box fan, 4″ filters actually increase resistance and reduce airflow compared with 2″ filters. UC Davis testing on CR boxes shows 2″ MERV‑13 filters give better airflow and CADR than 1″, and going thicker doesn't add benefit because the CR box already increases surface area by using multiple filters. Here's a link to the inventor's walkthrough for anyone interested. https://engineering.ucdavis.edu/n...enthal-box
