No spoilers on the abilities you learn but, over the course of the game, you become an extraordinary force to be reckoned with. Late-game, there's a chance to really let loose, and it's still one of my favorite combat sequences in gaming history.
Long and short, I'd say Control is worth playing at most any price, but $3.60 is theft in the best possible way.
