It's not even that true for 1" filters. Project farm did a video on filters. The 3m high merv rating filter did better because it has way more pleats than the crappy filters. The advice to not use high merv rating filters is basically an old wives tale. The test results don't back it up. The real advice is don't use a crappy filter.

This is an old wives tale at this point. Watch this review by project farm. https://youtu.be/RkjRKIRva58?si=RuWmEItE3modd6x5

This same filter in the 1" format is tested. It has the forth best results when dirty only being beaten by a 2" and 4" filter and one of those crappy filters you can see through. The high merv rating 3m filters have like double to three times the amount of filtering media. It's in the review. They have more surface area to let air through. They don't stress the system any more than other filters. Buying a poor quality filter is the biggest factor.

Filters that exceed MERV 8 may place excessive stress on your fan motor. Your system's manufacturer can usually give a general recommendation but much also depends on the air resistance in your ductwork.

I got this last time. This is a little smaller than 16 x 25 . So leaves a gap. Had issues this pollen season. replaced with the ones from home Depot which fits snuggly than this one.

That's only true for the 1" filters. The thicker ones don't restrict air flow as much for the same MERV

With traditional 1" ones you would be correct.

4 and 5" filters can last up to a year and still flow.

Not sure why this is getting downvoted as I've had multiple professional HVAC people tell me this over the years. Anything over 11 is like beyond what a residential system can handle unless you run a server farm in your house.

Because it's only true for 1" filter. This is 5".

Wirecutter's most recent comparison of HVAC filters explicitly accounts for pressure drop (airflow restriction) in their rankings. That data is finally available in a consistent format for a lot of filters. 3M Filtrete tend to be less restrictive (easier on your HVAC system) than others of the same MERV rating.

It's a shame that stocking up takes up so much space.
