Nintendo's official NES and SNES Switch controllers are prized for their authentic feel and nostalgia, especially for retro play on Switch, OpenEmu, NES Classic, MiSTer, and even original consoles with the right receiver. The SNES pad is repeatedly described as feeling exactly like the original, and the controllers can connect quickly on Windows or Mac when paired properly. The main drawbacks are Nintendo's Switch Online requirement to order them, limited lifetime purchase caps, and inconsistent Bluetooth behavior on non Nintendo devices, especially Android. They also tend to be out of stock often, so availability can be as much of the story as the hardware itself.

Common Questions (5)

  • They can work very well on Mac Mini with OpenEmu, on Windows 11, and even on original consoles when paired with an 8BitDo Bluetooth receiver or BlueRetro. Some users also report immediate pairing and flawless use after firmware updates.

  • The official controllers are praised for matching the original SNES feel exactly, while 8BitDo options are often described as slightly better for PC, Android, and emulation because they add more buttons and broader compatibility. If you want the authentic OEM feel, these are the closer match; if you want versatility, 8BitDo is the more practical pick.

  • The controllers are frequently out of stock, and the price has reportedly been higher since tariff-related increases last year. That makes restocks notable even when the current price is not the original launch price.

  • Yes. A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required to purchase them, and Nintendo also appears to enforce lifetime order limits per account for each controller. Family plan members may each have their own limit.

  • They can be unreliable on Android and other non-Nintendo devices, sometimes identifying as a Joy-Con or only registering a few buttons. Input lag and incomplete button support are reported, so they are better suited to Nintendo ecosystems or supported receivers.

They absolutely did not raise prices because of tariff stop pandering
Do your research. In 2025, the US tariffs amounted to an average tax increase of $1,000 per US household. taxfoundation(.)org estimates the newer tariffs announced if imposed will increase taxes per US household an additional $700 in 2026. Don't let data hurt your snowflake feelings, tariffs are causing goods and services to cost more.

These work well with the NES Classic. I would imagine the SNES Classic too. I bought the 8bitdo retro receiver and the NES controller works great.

Not that guy, bu that's clearly why it's getting more and more expensive for the Japanese too right? Us tarrifs clearly dictate all markets? The way some of MUST push your politics and ideology in even sales forums is annoying.

I have no idea what you are mumbling on about. This a reply to @Timsixfour "They absolutely did not raise prices because of tariff stop pandering". I didn't mentation anything about politics just tariffs driving up costs in the US. As far as the Japanese inflation you can do a search for that to see what's going on with them if you want - currently they are in a pinch with energy costs going up due to conflicts in the middle east.

Maybe. They work like crap when connected to most bluetooth devices, which is by design. Nintendo doesn't want them used on other devices. When connected to my Nvidia Shield, my SNES controller would only register a few buttons. On my Linux PC it registered all buttons, but Android recognized it as a Joycon.

There's more functional bluetooth controllers out there. Skip this.

Also requires Nintendo online or you can't even order it.
This is not at all my experience with these. Perhaps they have updated the firmware. They have worked amazingly well for me with PC (Win11) and also other bluetooth devices that use bt controllers. I use these paired with both Windows, and as my main controller (with an 8bitdo Bluetooth receiver) on an actual SNES console. They connect immediately and work fine. Maybe try updating them?

Sucks that Nintendo hides these controller replicas behind a paywall by way of a Switch Online subscription.

I've lived there and have family there. You people say anything to push your politics. Prices are going up in japan because they were using the Us and europeans to subsidize the local market. Shareholders aren't happy with the quarterly earnings and in turn are charging more for the hardware, and less on software. The price went up 2x folds and not one person is crying about local politics like we do here.

Try Android devices. They register as a Switch joycon, because that's all they are with a fancy enclosure. Input lag is pretty bad on just about all devices, most buttons working or not. There are dozens of better controllers out there for this type of thing.

Once again who is pushing politics? The comment was about tariffs in the US that are causing the US to pay more for goods - this is a fact. I hope your family is doing OK with prices going up in Japan do to whatever reason.
