The 3m filter that is a merv 13 filter in the 1" format is tested. It has the forth best results when dirty only being beaten by a 2" and 4" filter and one of those crappy filters you can see through. The high merv rating 3m filters have like double to three times the amount of filtering media. They have more surface area to let air through. They don't stress the system any more than other filters. Buying a poor quality filter is the biggest factor.
