How does this compare to Home Depot's brand 12-pack there shows around $45 for the same MERV8 for the size (16x25x1) I am looking for.

Yes, I didn't think this price was all that slick - Menards is always around this price and you can buy just 1 (but not everyone has a Menards near them). Merv 11 is the filter that is the best balance between decent filtering, but not so much that it makes your furnace have to work harder. Merv 8 filtering isn't all that great.

Hmm. Will have to check those out. Need some 16x20. My other unit requires a special size (Actual Size: 16.50 x 21.50 x 0.75), and I've gotten them from a couple Amazon vendors, including FilterBuy.

Short answer no, and these aren't HEPA rated filter. If you want a cheap filters for the Winix, just get the aftermarket ones from Amazon or eBay as there are some decent 3rd party HEPA filters.

This 3M air filter is better quality than the aforementioned filters above. In the title on the Costco website it notes "Pet Dander Filter," however this filter is probably < 20% effective against cat dander. MERV 13 is the sweet spot for cat dander. Also, taping or sealing a MERV 13 filter is where you will see the absolute maximum benefit from eliminating cat dander bypass.

Just curious, if the other brands are also MERV 8 why is the 3M MERV 8 better quality?

be very careful with these if you have AC. My mom's system (9 years old) was short cycling, the line between the condenser and the house was freezing up and the AC was not working well. It was these filters. They restrict too much airflow and can cause problems.
Switched to a merv 5 and the issue is gone.

Can't speak on these but I've compared other generics like HDX to Filtrete and it's a combination of things. The frame feels flimsier on the generics. They sometimes don't fit quite right. The last set I ordered came crushed even though the shipping box was intact. There is also the number of pleats. The Filtrete tend to have more pleats which means better air flow. MERV is just a rating of how well it filters air. You would still have a Merv 8 rating even if you removed all the pleats and just made a flat sheet of filter paper but the air flow would drop significantly to where it wouldn't be usable which is why there are pleats to begin with.
