The cost of chips, whether you were talking about SSDs, CPUs or GPUs, have all gone up drastically because of the build-outs of these dang data centers. These data centers are power hogs and utilities are happy because they're going to be making some money. They also use a lot of fresh water for cooling these monsters. As an example, I bought a 4TB Samsung SSD for around $200 about 2 years ago. Now, it's gone up more than 400% across the board.
