PowerBlock EXP adjustable dumbbells are praised as a compact, durable alternative to twist dial sets, with a more natural curl position, quick weight changes, and easy expansion as strength increases. The stand gets strong support for keeping the weights off the floor, reducing bending, and making the setup feel more convenient over time. Main tradeoffs are the bulky cage, thicker rubber grips, and occasional awkwardness for curls or small hands. Compatibility for bars and some expansion kits is limited, so future add ons need checking.

Common Questions (5)

  • The stand mainly adds convenience by giving you a flat place to change weights and keeping the dumbbells off the floor. It also reduces bending and back strain with heavier sets, and several owners say it makes the setup much easier to live with long term.

  • Yes, the EXP can be expanded with later stages, and several comments warn that expansions may be harder to find if the line is discontinued. Buying the stages you expect to need up front avoids paying more or hunting for stock later.

  • The rectangular PowerBlock shape lets you hold the weights closer to your body for a more natural curl than twist-dial designs. It also lets you add expansion stages later instead of being stuck at the lower weight range of many dial systems.

  • The listed EXP set does not work with the barbell, kettlebell, or EZ-bar attachments, and PowerBlock does not make a clamp-on bar for this model. The compatible bar accessory appears to exist for the 90 EXP instead, not this deal's EXP version.

  • The Pro 50 uses knurled stainless grips and urethane-coated weights, which are quieter but bulkier. The EXP uses a rubber grip and uncoated metal weights, and the EXP can reportedly be upgraded with knurled grips later.

I believe the elites are the ones with the restrictive bars. The standard ones don't seem to have the same bars.

I have these up to 70 lbs (just bought the 70-90 lb expansion) and I love them. I have the stand as well and these sit conveniently at my side. The ease of switching between weights is incredibly convenient and takes just a few seconds. It also takes up very little space. Highly recommend.

Could anyone explain why stands are worth it? Mostly convenient than picking up from the ground or any other use case I might be missing?
The weight selectors don't line up well if they aren't on a good flat surface. I keep my 5-50 non-exp set on a piece of plywood in my workout room because it's carpet, and it still is 50/50 on whether it lines up correctly. Also picking them up from the ground does suck.

So SO much better than the twist dial weights. You can hold these close enough to your body to do a natural curl vs the twist weights are always too wide.
I do recommend getting the stand if you can also afford that. You can also add weights to this as you progress vs being g stuck at the lower weights of many of the twist dials.
can't you get the twist dial weights closer to the body because it's only the handle in the way? for these types it's a giant rectangle box around your fist

How long have you owned this stand, and how do you like it (and how has it held up)? Anything about it you don't like?

I've been eyeing that one as well, but I have yet to pull the trigger, as I need to make a little bit more room in the garage to accommodate a stand.

Yeah I've been a big fan of these. I will say though, you don't have to pull the trigger, these come on woot (the weights and stand) pretty regularly at this price. My only major complaint has been that I wish adding/removing the 2.5 lbs was a little quicker.
Also check local facebook markeplace/craigslist for used ones, might get a better deal.

Are you trying to hammer curl? I am talking about a genuine curl. The twist weights are the same width no matter what due to the weights being on a fixed grid that comes with the handle no matter how much weight you choose. These won't be as wide (width from edge of plate to edge of opposite plate) until you hit like 100lbs+ in each hand...

I have a very very old school set, like the original ever made, can't even find info on them, bought on CL. They were sold to universities and normally have the university branding on them, mine are super simple to add 2.5lbs to, the cylinders are right in the middle of both weights on the stand it came with. Pull the bar out, grab the handle and add 2.5lb, put handle back into weights and reselect your weight. Not sure if that is different, but I don't mess with 2.5lb increments much tbh, but I'm not trying to max things out, I just want a comfortable workout.

Tried an older version of these and was not a fan. The cage annoyed me, the weight in hand seemed off balanced and spun too much, changing out the plates was more annoying than expected and not being able to gently drop them down like standard dumbbells sums up all my complaints. If you like them, great! If you're on the fence, just consider my experience.

Which part spun? The ones I have are a bit unique to all the versions that went to consumer market, but are similar to what the elite ones ended up becoming, but I've tried the newest versions of these within the last 7 years or so, and also tried the versions that they originally mass produced. The newer versions within the last 7 years or so are significantly better than the original mass produced product. But I am genuinely curious as to what was spinning? They are squared weights, they shouldn't have any spin to them. You also don't change the plates, they sit on a stand (ideally if you buy the stand) and you shove a metal rod or a plastic piece in the amount of weight you want and pick it up, I almost wonder if you are talking about the same product? Did you have Powerblocks, or something else?

55 yo here. I am fit enough. You all needing more than 55 lbs each ( level 1) are nutz. You need a real gym at that point. Or at least a squat rack or a universal. Either you are super fit and into weightlifting and really need a form factor thats going to work in a small space, thats great but not as common as inflated ego types that are overambitious and are going to hurt themselves with bad form and no spotters. Don't like what im saying? 1) You're aging. 2) I work in rehab and see patients. 3)Have fun with your tendonitis. Or worse.

What's the difference between this Woot deal (EXP) and the Pro 50 on the PowerBlock website advertising $549 for 50 lbs? I can't even seem to find this EXP version on the PowerBlock site.
