I'm actually a little surprised this is a "deal"; I think I joined back in 2018 for between $6-8/yr for a three year term. I never renewed because it saved me nothing and just added me to a bunch of spam advertising lists (I used [email protected] so I know they sold their lists).
I'm impressed you got the WalMart $40 to stack with the half-off promo; All of the click-through promos I've tried (my memb was pre- W+) actually reset the costs to "list" price and then the AARP promo was applied, but nothing stacked (the holy grail of the SlickDeal). Hotels/motels/flights were pretty much similar - the click-through to Expedia (or whoever they've contracted with these days) only shows you the public facing rates, not the Hotel member or other preferred rates like AAA. So, for example, I go to Booking.com and find a Wyndham for $130/night, with my base-level discount, then I click through AARP and I get a $159/night less 10% = $143.10. That's not a deal. Most of the discounts are the same or less attractive than a click-through like [url redacted].
Now, I'm sure there are one or two options that give you something. If you can find and use those, great. But CCs, phone plans, and internet providers are throwing all sorts of discounts at their users these days, so paying $10-15/yr doesn't carry a lot of net value.
