Product Description:
  • The Cold Steel Trail Boss is compact enough to carry all day in your hand or strapped to your pack, yet tough enough for chores that would make a hatchet or tomahawk scream for mercy. Featuring a European style head with a 4" blade and a 4 1/2" cutting edge, it takes a big bite with every swing. Plus, it features a very sturdy, durable straight-grained American Hickory handle. In our extensive field-tests in the outback of Australia, the Trail Boss was used to chop kindling, clear roads and trails, to build blinds and even to chop down a fair sized tree! Head weight: 1lb 13 oz (not NATF legal). Total weight: 2lb 9.5 oz.

I'll second the Fiskars recommendation. I have many of their tools including hatchets, axes and a splitting maul. I haven't been disappointed in any of them. They make great shovels too. I'd buy just about anything made by Fiskars.

It's CLEARLY not marketed as, or meant to be used as, a SPLITTING axe, it's a chopper. Saying that it's not good for splitting, causing some people to devalue the axe, is like saying about a car that's it's terrible on snow trails. 🙄 I've owned this axe for years and the people who REALLY use it on trails and camping are the ones you should be listening to. Just look at the actual product reviews by real axe users and you'll see that this is a really good value axe at this price, period!

decent price for a weak tool: I bought one of these for $22 five years ago and broke the handle off within a few weeks.

Decent price, but not a good axe for splitting due to the head profile. If you want a splitting axe of similar size I'd recommend Fiskars X25

Yeah, I recommend a Fiskars for a splitting axe but again this is not meant for splitting.

Yeah, this is similar to a GB Small Forest Axe for backpacking, not a splitting maul. I have one of these and love it, but know what it is for.

What's the durability of this axe against zombies and PDF cult members?

The head is fine, durability-wise. If your zombies are relatively fresh, you may want to slightly reprofile the head to thin the cheeks so it doesn't stick. Handles are always a crapshoot unless you can pick it out in person. But if you do break the one that comes with it, it's a great opportunity to (1) learn to read the grain and understand what makes a handle strong, and (2) learn how to rehang an axe. It's not that difficult, and it's better to learn -before- the first human host is infected.
