You are certainly not wrong about that. The new version is a couple years overdue and since early 2025, everybody "knows" the release is imminent.
Still, I wouldn't be buying the current version unless at fire sale prices if you need one to go on a second TV. The consensus is that the new version has been ready to ship hardware wise for months, but that it is being held up until the big Apple AI splash actually happens. And that is very likely to be the week of June 8.

Apples Worldwide Developers Conference is from Mon, Jun 8, 2026 – Fri, Jun 12, 2026. Alot of expectations for new AI features and hardware to compliment it. Including homepods and appletv. Chances are one of those two will be announced, but obviously cant rely on a target date of the actual release for sale.

This version already streams well.. the A15 chip in this model is still overkill compared to most streaming devices.

Not sure a new model would be an actual upgrade?

I'm not going to sit here and say when the new version is going to be released but I would not buy this one. If you really need a device now get a fire tv stick 4k max for 30 bucks until the new apple tv comes out and everyone else hold.

When the new one comes out it's going to be a lot more than this because of chip shortages and inflation kicking in since this one came out.
