Costco's AppleCare seem to be cheapest at $179, and you have up to 60 days to buy it.

Is the 60 days retroactive to the day of the purchase, or starts on the day of you buy the AppleCare which could be up to 60 days after purchase?

fair point on the hardware lasting, but I doubt you're get the apple update support for that long.

Yes you would, which is why I said 7-8 years. This is typically how long Apple provides major MacOS upgrades for MacBooks. Security updates continue for another 1-3 years after that.
