Rao's marinara is praised for its restaurant-like taste and easy flavoring, with the glass jars avoiding the dented-can problem that comes with some pantry sauces. The 15.5 ounce jars are repeatedly described as small, and the price is often compared unfavorably with larger Costco, Sam's Club, Aldi, and local store options. Delivery damage is the biggest concern, with smashed or cracked jars and leaking boxes reported often enough to make shipping feel risky. It is a convenient sauce if you will use it quickly, but the value depends heavily on size and safe delivery.

  • Home cooks who finish sauce in small batches, because the 15.5-ounce jars are easy to use before they sit around.

  • Shoppers who want a sauce that tastes close to restaurant marinara, because it is described as comparable to regular restaurant sauce.

  • People who like to customize jarred marinara, because it takes well to olives, mushrooms, peppers, onions, or garlic.

  • Gift basket makers and raffle organizers, because the jars fit well with pasta and a pot holder.

  • Shoppers who need fragile glass shipped intact, because broken, smashed, or leaking jars are a recurring delivery problem.

  • Families wanting a large pantry jar, because the 15.5-ounce size is smaller than common 24- to 32-ounce alternatives.

  • People who want the lowest per-ounce price, because comparable 22- to 32-ounce jars are repeatedly cited at better club-store prices.

  • Anyone worried about damaged seals or spoilage, because dented or broken jars can hide contamination risk and are often treated as unsafe.

This is fine if you don't use an entire jar all the time, and if you reuse jars

Dented cans can let in oxygen and when they spoil makes a toxin. I'm not really wanting to ruin my organs or hospitalized over a big dented can that always happens with amazon orders. There is no savings when one jar is broken and half the cans are dented.
In today's world dented cans are no big deal. As long as the integrity of the can is good; no issues. I buy many dented cans from a discount store nearby and have not had issues for years. Have saved hundreds on premium brands.

Todays world has the same botulism toxin from broken seals as when my elderly mother and grandmother did home canning. You can't look at the dent and see if the edge crease has a pinhole or not. Especially if its at the top or bottom welded area. The best you can do is look and smell the product but nah, I'm not risking more than the tiniest of dents only on the sides. Tons are thrown away for this reason. A lifetime of dialysis or death really sounds appealing. I've been hospitalized a couple times from bad food and I don't wish to keep doing that. Feels worse than pneumonia and even a broken bone.

Damn, hospitalized multiple times from bad food? Care to share the food that did it for curiosity's sake?

Sure, one time it was an old Mcdonalds cheap chicken sandwich that was left on their shelf far too many hours. Another time beef in a broth put on a sandwich from a restraunt like a Philly cheese steak. Another time I fully passed out and laid out on the floor from dehydration and taken by ambulance to the hospital. Ok after 3 bags of IV fluid. Can't recall what I ate that time but IIRC it was fast food. Got super sick a couple other times but didn't go to the hospital one was again the 99cent chicken sandwich and another meat in noodles I might be to blame eating them for too many hours not refridgerated. No botulism poisoning. Have opened cans where it's runny and smelled bad and in the trash they went. No thanks! I didn't sue because how do you prove it? Only once the ER Dr did some buttswab and said ecoli was negative. Ok, that didn't solve anything. Chinese restraunts in general. My local news publishes inspections and they are notorious for bad violations like leaving meat out uncovered and not cooled. No sanitizer for cleaning. I now try to eat only a couple bits from a untried chinese place before I will "eat there" because then I vomit only once 🤮 I think I'm more sensitive to spoiled bacteria foods than an average person. No medical conditions though.
I just got a two pack of these sauce from Sams Club sale $7 and I think this same size. Much smaller than the 32oz I got at costco.

15.5oz is very small. Costco sells 32oz jars and occasionally has them on sale at 2/$9

$4.30 EA for the 15.5oz is not a slick deal, if it was the 24oz then it's a decent deal. Especially now that it's Campbell's.
Oh! Good catch, I didn't even think about it being smaller, thank you! Cancelling!

I never worried about it until I got 1 or 2 busted jars that ruined all the items in the box. I don't have Amazon Prime so they were probably rotting for a couple of days when it arrived. They weren't even individually wrapped in case of a spill or leak. Amazon refunded everything but it was a pain to clean. I tried to salvage some of the other items and ended up cutting and stabbing my hand like a dummy.
Same experience last time I bought this on Amazon after seeing it here.

They were bought by Campbells in 2024, how exactly have they been ruined? Or are you thinking of Savos buying them in 2017? That's when they started showing up in Costco I think.
Campbell's made a point of saying they will not touch the Rao's recipe. They understand that you don't mess with success !
