Rao's marinara is praised for its restaurant-like taste and easy flavoring, with the glass jars avoiding the dented-can problem that comes with some pantry sauces. The 15.5 ounce jars are repeatedly described as small, and the price is often compared unfavorably with larger Costco, Sam's Club, Aldi, and local store options. Delivery damage is the biggest concern, with smashed or cracked jars and leaking boxes reported often enough to make shipping feel risky. It is a convenient sauce if you will use it quickly, but the value depends heavily on size and safe delivery.

Common Questions (5)

  • Glass-jar damage is a recurring risk with Amazon delivery, including smashed, cracked, leaking, or exploded jars. The upside is that broken glass is easy to spot and reject, but the downside is cleanup and refunds can be a hassle.

  • Costco and Sam's Club are repeatedly cited as better value options, with larger jars for similar or lower per-ounce pricing. Aldi's Specially Selected marinara is also mentioned as a cheaper alternative at about $4, while Mutti, Carbone, and Michael's of Brooklyn are brought up as taste comparisons.

  • The 15.5 oz jars work out to about $4.30 each, which is smaller than the 24 oz or 32 oz jars many shoppers compare against. Better value comparisons mentioned are Sam's Club at 2 x 22 oz for $7 to $7.76 and Costco at 2 x 32 oz for about $9.69 to $12.99.

  • The sauce is still described as tasting good and comparable to restaurant sauce, and it can be easily adjusted with spices, olives, mushrooms, onions, or garlic. A separate complaint says the brand was better before Campbell's and that there are better alternatives, so the main practical appeal is flavor rather than premium value.

  • This deal is less attractive if you want a larger jar, because 15.5 oz is considered small and many supermarket jars are 24 oz or 32 oz. It makes more sense if you only use part of a jar at a time or plan to reuse the jars.

These are a good price; I like to include them in baskets with pasta and a pot holder for gift baskets for raffles.

I've bought dozens of food products from Amazon over the last roughly 15 years and literally every order had a similar problem. For example:
Canned goods: Always dented, smashed, stored incorrectly (probably in a hot warehouse or in the sun) and/or contaminated with unknown stains on the outside of every can with who knows whaat liquids or animal urine/feces. When you dent a can it eliminates the vacuum inside making the contents prone to spoiling much sooner. Contents lifespan is significantly shortened because of both dents and hot storage and there is no way to tell how much shorter it got, but you can be sure it will go bad sometime before it hits the "best by" date so use it immediately to discover if it has already gone bad so you can actually get a refund in the 30 day return window, or to consume it while it is still good since it won't be good for much longer. Most items were clearly dented before they were even shipped, but those that weren't will be dented a lot more during shipping since almost no Amazon warehouse worker ever packs canned goods correctly so all the cans move/bang around loose in the box and get to your doorstep a lot more dented/smashed.
Glass jars: Also stored incorrectly (probably hot warehouse or in the sun), often having unknown stains on the outside of the jars, and when they are shipped roughly 90% of all glass jar shipments have had at least 1 broken jar by the time they get to my doorstep, always caused by a dumb warehouse worker who didn't pad them correctly to stop them from banging against each other or using enough packing material to stop all the jars from just tumbling around loose in the box.
If you really want this sauce, get it from Costco as they usually have a 2-pack for around $9-$10 which is still a much better deal than any grocery store sells this for. You can be sure the sauce you purchase at Costco will be fresh and unbroken. All food items sold on Amazon that seem like a really good deal are priced that way because they are trying to get rid of it due to one of these problems I mentioned above, at least that's what I've noticed over 15 years of ordering dozens of food products and always getting the same disappointing results.

Buying anything with the potential to leak from Amazon is a big risk.

I find Carbone and Michael's of Brooklyn better than Rao but they are expensive and never on sale. I also find Mutti to be just as good as Rao and they are more often on sale.

This was a good product before Campbell's ruined it. Don't buy. There are better brands out there.
Oh stop with the Campbell's nonsense. This tastes the same as it always has.

That's a good price for 2. Now if it makes it to you without it being smashed is another story. That's usually my issue every time I try to buy these or the soups on sale.
Dented cans can let in oxygen and when they spoil makes a toxin. I'm not really wanting to ruin my organs or hospitalized over a big dented can that always happens with amazon orders. There is no savings when one jar is broken and half the cans are dented.

15.5oz is very small. Costco sells 32oz jars and occasionally has them on sale at 2/$9
I just got a two pack yesterday but don't recall the price. This sauce is good to me as any others. Ragu is too sweet. It's too easy to adjust the flavor with black olives or mushrooms or the packs of free spicy peppers from the last pizza order. Fresh onions or garlic if that's you. It's good from the jar but so easy to reflavor.

These come in glass jars so no dented cans here, you'll just have smashed glass so an easy thing to notice and reject.

What changed in the ingredients? Or is this just routine corporate bashing?
