Laowa made their new zoom compact ultra wide available in m43 mount. And SG image is providing their new APSC AF lenses in m43 mount as well. So I don't think third parties are quite done with m43 just yet.

Not dead enough for the lenses I want to be dirt cheap yet!
I'm still pretty happy with the system and bought a new body not that long ago, but honestly...my iphone 16 pro (especially having a tele lens) has really cut back on how much I use it.
The tele lens isn't that good, but they are getting better and will probably be a lot better by the time I upgrade my phone again. Being able to deal with everything on my phone rather than play with memory cards just makes everything so much easier. My photos automatically sync their way into Lightroom eventually...but 95% of what I want to do with a photo can be done right there on my phone screen and posted/shared immediately.
So I kinda get it. I thought m4/3 was incredible for the size/weight/quality balance, especially when Canon/Nikon hadn't fully embraced mirrorless yet...but the phones are so good now that if you are going to commit to carrying a real camera, you can probably handle carrying a full frame mirrorless setup.
I still think my EM-5 is a nice hiking setup though--hangs really well from a backpack strap with a Peak Designs Capture clip--and some of that Olympus Pro glass is really good.
edit: and this is just conjecture, but the "problem" with m4/3 was always that it was harder to generate as much bokeh as a full frame camera (because physics) and that was THE thing that a lot of new photographers were chasing since you couldn't get that look with a point and shoot or early phone camera. But now that iphone portrait mode has everyone and their brother sharing phots with extreme background blur, that feature isn't as compelling. For people who actually want to capture some depth of field, the m4/3 platform is great.

Full agreement.
Maybe it's not 100% dead, but for Olympus + Panasonic having 2-3 different camera body lines, releasing bodies every 1-3 years for each of those lines on each of the manufacturers....now it's down to one, MAYBE two releases in TOTAL every year.
Third-party lens manufacturers are no longer releasing m43-mount versions of their new releases.
It'll disappear with a whimper.
On the other hand, DJI just released an "action" cam with a m43 mount. So, maybe there'll be a resurgence? Eh, probably not since DJI is federally banned from sale in the USA. So highly doubtful it'll make a return here.

I love Olympus glass, but when I needed something in this focal length, I ended up settling on the Lumix/LEICA 15mm instead. Both are good lenses, but definitely compare images and prices between the two before jumping.

GoPro also announced the MISSION 1 ILS which uses M43 lenses.
I'm also frugal (that's why I'm on SD) and looked for an alternative to the expensive Olympus 4/3 lenses. In my case I was looking for a decent portrait lens and settled for the reasonable Panasonic Lumix 25mm f 1.7. Don't recall what I paid for it many years ago (probably around $100), but it is currently available for around $200. However I can't recall every using this len, preferring the versatility of the 14-42mm zoom (though very slow at f 3.5-5.6) which came with this camera.
It's a shame that the 4/3 format didn't take off. It had such a weight reducing potential compared to my older full format cameras. However it ran headlong into the phone/camera evolution.

True, but apparently you miss the part they also announced they're going to try to sell the company. So the announcement of m43 system has more to do with them trying to fetch a good price for the company, than to produce an actual system. And technically they only announced use of physical m43 mount ring. It lacks any of the electrical connectors so there is no autofocus, nor aperture change. and the sensor is only one inch. So to say that they support M43 is quite a stretch, which is also the reason why I think they will never produce it.
As someone who started with Olympus M43 a decade ago, I have extensive collection of the lens, including all lenses in this entire series and many more. I think this is a typical case of if you know you want to buy this, you already have a copy of it (this lens was on sale for similar prices years ago from Olympus outlet for long time). If you haven't bought this lens, especially if you haven't bought into the system, you probably want to buy something else. the advantage of m43 system in this day and age is, hard to justify.
