I'm still pretty happy with the system and bought a new body not that long ago, but honestly...my iphone 16 pro (especially having a tele lens) has really cut back on how much I use it.
The tele lens isn't that good, but they are getting better and will probably be a lot better by the time I upgrade my phone again. Being able to deal with everything on my phone rather than play with memory cards just makes everything so much easier. My photos automatically sync their way into Lightroom eventually...but 95% of what I want to do with a photo can be done right there on my phone screen and posted/shared immediately.
So I kinda get it. I thought m4/3 was incredible for the size/weight/quality balance, especially when Canon/Nikon hadn't fully embraced mirrorless yet...but the phones are so good now that if you are going to commit to carrying a real camera, you can probably handle carrying a full frame mirrorless setup.
I still think my EM-5 is a nice hiking setup though--hangs really well from a backpack strap with a Peak Designs Capture clip--and some of that Olympus Pro glass is really good.
edit: and this is just conjecture, but the "problem" with m4/3 was always that it was harder to generate as much bokeh as a full frame camera (because physics) and that was THE thing that a lot of new photographers were chasing since you couldn't get that look with a point and shoot or early phone camera. But now that iphone portrait mode has everyone and their brother sharing phots with extreme background blur, that feature isn't as compelling. For people who actually want to capture some depth of field, the m4/3 platform is great.
Maybe it's not 100% dead, but for Olympus + Panasonic having 2-3 different camera body lines, releasing bodies every 1-3 years for each of those lines on each of the manufacturers....now it's down to one, MAYBE two releases in TOTAL every year.
Third-party lens manufacturers are no longer releasing m43-mount versions of their new releases.
It'll disappear with a whimper.
On the other hand, DJI just released an "action" cam with a m43 mount. So, maybe there'll be a resurgence? Eh, probably not since DJI is federally banned from sale in the USA. So highly doubtful it'll make a return here.
