My Samsung Galaxy s25 has free satellite texting through t-mobile, worked great in Yosemite... these garmins are the new walkie-talkie's, soon to be extinct.

They are tougher and the battery lasts much much longer. Their purpose doesn't fit your use case.

Tell me you've never truly gone off grid for long periods without telling me...

Fwiw. Some Garmin watches can connect to the Inreach so you can send SOS from your wrist. This can save a live if immobilized.

Eh I go off grid for long periods. A small solar panel and a battery plus my Apple Watch Ultra with satellite as well as iPhone with satellite work great. I don't want even more gear. These really are going to be gone in a few years or less, especially for the insane price.

I have T-Mo Satellite service and runs $15. since a non T-Mo cellular customer. The SAT service is $10. with their service so you must be on some preium plan to get it free? I use Whatsapp on mine to stay in contact with daughters when in the backcountry. I was on their beta program last year and the service is working great now. All the big 3 cell companies are very nervous about Musk and his SAT network taking over the whole wireless industry. So be it if it's a better product. Yeah, the days of Garmin, SPOT, etc devices are waning.

you only turn on a device as needed in case of an emergency so battery life is a non issue. However if you are worried, get one of these 20,000 mAh batteries for under $25. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Portabl...3944752936

Ah yes buy an additional device to carry, all to do what one device already does really well - it's purpose built for durability in this use case. Especially when/if your tent floods or gear gets wet.

As others have said you aren't the market for the Garmin. If you do any serious multi day trekking you'll know that redundancy in your equipment is a priority. I wouldn't rely solely on my cell phone for support during a multiple trek trip, especially in backcountry. I'd bring the Garmin, the phone, and paper maps & compass at the minimum.

Driving into Yosemite and doing a casual hike you can get away with the cell phone with satellite communication. But I would still carry redundancy and bring the Garmin as well.
