Dumb question. How is this an amplifier if you need active speakers for power?

You don't need active speakers. You can use active or passive with this. Active connects to pre-out. Passive connects to output.

Calling all audiophiles for help. My journey has begun and I think I'm going to buy my first passive stereo setup with the Elac Debut 3.0 6.5 or Stark Sound Beta 5s. Why are people talking about monoblocks for stereo amplification or would this or the ZA3 work perfectly fine? I also already have a Wiim Ultra. I only have a small living room in a 1br apt

A Mono-block is just one channel of amplification. So you would need 2 Monoblocks to drive a pair of speakers.

If you are just getting started, a normal stereo amp will be fine.

Since you already have the Wiim, you don't need a 'bluetooth amp'. Just get the regular amp (with the money you save, you can opt for the larger, 48v power supply and get a little extra headroom out of the thing) :

Have another quick question, I want a basic setup in my home gym with the audio directly from the TV outputting to in-ceiling speakers. Would this amp be ideal to use instead of a full blown stereo receiver?

Just bought this with the 48v power supply a few weeks ago for $102 delivered. Super happy with it with my outdoor speakers. Bluetooth works flawless. Plenty of volume and separation is great. The wife didn't like the big stereo on top of the kitchen cabinets which was my best location, small form factor worked great and Bluetooth was a major plus.

I'm not a pro, but you might need rca red and white audio outputs on your tv. Maybe they make a hdmi or toslink converter, I'm guessing

This amp is fine for a couple ceiling speakers, just make sure your tv has the appropriate audio output and if going with passive speakers, make sure their specs are supported by this amp. If you want surround sound with heavy bass, this is not the amp for you.

I'm no audiophile but couldn't you use the pre-out to an active subwoofer for extra bass. Maybe you can't use both at the same time???

Just looked it up, you can use both. The pre out is a full range signal so your subwoofers needs its own crossover which is normal I think. Volume will be controlled by the Fosi
