Have an XPS 15 9520 and even though it's not a gaming laptop, it does have a Nvidia 3050. It has i7-12700h processor and 32gb ram and 1tb. Battery is 86wh but laptop is several years old and never replaced battery so it might get 1.5 hours on battery. I have it plugged almost always. The default graphics card is Intel iris xe graphics.
For any gaming laptop, always get 32gb ram right? I find my XPS to use like 29gb ram or more when I have a ton of chrome tabs open. The thing is what makes this a gaming laptop and not my XPS? I mean, wouldn't any laptop that has at least a 3050 count as one? But it isn't called a gaming laptop.
The thing is if I have issues doing something that is sort of like gaming where using a fast graphics card would help, does that mean a 3060 or 3070 would make a bigger difference? So a 3070ti or 3080 or even 3090 would have? I know it's now 5050, 5060 etc. Is 5060 like the average gaming graphics card you want? But once it's 5070, it makse a big difference? Or it's 5070ti? Now 5080 and 5090 is probably more than enough then right and most won't need that?

Nonetheless the 3050 in your dell is the same 3050 you would find in an entry level gaming laptop.
This specific model is a mid entry gaming laptop that is focused on clean looks and has an amazing screen with great color accuracy. ASUS brand it their "professional looking" gaming laptop series in exchange of some maximum power you can get out of the hardware since it's very slim, they still have way more powerful and spaceship looking gaming laptops . You can use gaming laptops for professional work... vast majority of engineering, architecture, 3d design students use gaming laptops because the value for money is way better than actual workstation laptops and they will work fine.
The CPU efficiency question is much harder to explain, as both AMD and intel have both high performance chips and lower powered efficiency chips, with very similar characteristics and names.
The one thing the entire tech industry is better at than any other is having really stupid farking names for their products .
According the reviews I saw the i9 200h series of processor are very good at battery life NONETHELESS that 16gb of RAM will definitely make it worse for your usecase. I would look for a similar model with 32gb of RAM even with a 5060 GPU since both it and the 5070 are limited to 8gb of VRAM and any of them are a huge leap in performance to your 3050. LENOVO LEGION also has some really clean looking gaming laptops.
For your monitor situation yes, vast majority of modern gaming laptops will connect the GPU directly to external monitors but you will not be able to have the machine at full power with an external battery bank, they require too much power and have to be plugged to the wall. The battery bank will only charge it if you have it on "low performance" mode and just browse the web.
TL;DR gaming laptops can also be used for professional work. Pick something you like with AT LEAST 32gb of ram and a 5060 GPU and you will see some huge improvements. Search up the laptop you chose on youtube for reviews, JARROD's TECH entire channel is very in depth laptop reviews.
My XPS 15 9520 is considered a multimedia laptop then? Someone mentioned it's not a gaming laptop but used another name for it. It's not a workstation laptop right?
With my XPS 15 9520 laptop and connected to the 2 external monitors, even when I have it connected to a power outlet, it doesn't seem to allow me to switch from the Intel iris xe graphics to the 3050 though? You mention you can't with external battery but I mean just when plugged in, it didn't offer the option. When I bought the XPS 15 9520, I believe it was only 3050, 3050ti, 3060, 3070, 3070ti, 3080 and 3090 that was available? So you are saying if I had a 3060, it make a noticeable difference compared to the 3050? I wanted my XPS laptop a while back to have at least a graphics card and got the 3050 that came along with the XPS 15 9520.
Are you saying even a 5050 now is better than a 3060 then? It's on par with what 4050 series? I can't imagine a 5050 is better than say a 3070ti right? I check online and a 4060 is superior to a 5050.
