I have this smoker. It's been great. Very well built for the price point. Prior to this one, I've had two pit boss pellet smokers and a Cuisinart pellet smoker. The Members Mark smoker has been the best that I've had.

Heat distribution is quite good. There is a heavy gauge steel flame deflector under the large drip tray that definitely improves heat distribution.

There is a smoker box that you can put wood chunks in for some additional smoke generator. Sometimes it's hit or miss on self igniting the wood chunks and I've had to use a torch to get them going.

The regular price used to be $499. I bought it a year ago from tomorrow for $429 though. Obviously things have changed since then though.

The only thing I don't really like is the lack of WiFi and Bluetooth to monitor/adjust smoker temp.

How does this compare with the Traeger on sale for $499 everywhere right now?

Based on everything I've seen, the Member's Mark has better heat retention via double wall/thicker gauge, a smoke box for actual wood chunks, induction side burner, and a cover. All else being relatively similar. No Bluetooth/wifi on either.

I don't have direct experience with this Traeger model but I can point out a few things that the Members Mark smoker has that the Traeger doesn't. The Members Mark smoker has a double walled design for heat retention (reduce pellet consumption, more even heat), a gasket on the lid, and the smoker box.

That style Traeger is basically their original.

Used this smoker for the 1st time this weekend. Very happy with how the food came out and how little pellets it uses. Highly recommend!

I have a Traeger pellet grill and if their smoker is anything like their grill... I'd seek other options, I'm a 19 year chef and my Traeger is one of my most disappointing appliances.

I gave up on pellet grills years ago. Never really felt an affinity for them, but I won one in a giveaway so why not give it a spin?
The double wall and the gasket of the MM are far superior. You want a consistent temp across your grill, and these features will improve consistency. Or you can figure out the oddities and use it to your advantage, sometimes.
I'll also say that Traegers are not made as well as they used to be before the company sold. Those were pretty low tech, well made, and reasonably reliable (as far as pellet grills go). Today's Traegers are much more optimized for reducing the cost to build. Their high end grills are pretty good, but they're largely trading on their name as the company that invented the pellet grill market. Other brands are at least as good, and for less money. Some are just made way better for similar or a bit more money.
TO me, the worst part of pellet grills is that they have so many parts that can fail. And you'll only find out about it when you want to use it. Anything well made and with a passive draft is going to work for decades without much concern beyond replacing a rusting grate, which is no surprise. I primarily cook on weber kettles and a weber smokey mountain these days. Sometimes I do miss the convenience of a pellet grill....I could just turn it on and focus on other things while the wood fired oven cooked. But it's just not convenient when you have to break out the shop vac and putty knife for cleaning, or your ignitor rod is shot, or you have a jam in the auger, etc. Pellet grills also make horrible grills. You're just baking with some smoke, so you never get the direct flame cooking effect. At best, it's some kind of strange shield that opens up the firebox a bit or something electric that just doesn't get as hot.

Each have their place. I still use my charcoal Kamado alongside my pellet smoker. The pellet smoker is great for long smoke cooks when you can't babysit the smoker all day. You'll get more smoke flavor on charcoal but this particular smoker does give you a bit of smoke boost with the wood smoke box.

Charcoal is still king for searing steaks.

Can anyone without plus post what kinda shipping prices they're seeing? I'd have to reup my membership for this and am unsure if I should just spring for plus to start with.

This was $400 about the same time last year. The smoke tray is nice--copycat of the camp chef feature. As others have said, connectivity and general tech features are lack luster. I also don't like the small upper rack/cook area as I do a lot of cooks with a water pan underneath for moisture and heat deflection. $550 seems a little high IMO. The induction side burner has already gone out on ours.

These things fail too often to purchase from Sam's. Play the long game and purchase from Costco. You can return later for full credit when it eventually fails.

I saw someone wheeling a sad looking broken grill back into Sam's last night and getting the Walmart level of customer support.
