If you are ok with white band and white side of watch face (can just get a black cover for $10) and a Garmin refurbished unit with their warranty, can get for $399 with no tax (except for CA): https://www.gpsnation.com/product...efurbished

I have and still wear this daily. Love it, but a few notes worth considering:

- There's no speaker/mic (so you can't answer calls on it).
- The Fenix 8 has a speaker and mic and is also currently on sale.
- Feels like Fenix 9 is imminent given the sales, but if you're new to Garmin and this is within your budget, it's a good watch.

The Fenix 8 47mm has a bigger screen compared to 47mm Epix Gen 2. Personally, for that one reason, I would wait for the Fenix 8 hopefully on sale later this year. All other functionality to me are essentially the same between the two or unnecessary. I have a smartphone already and don't want the Fenix 8 smart watch features.

I wouldn't be spending $500 on a Garmin these days, they are not what they used to be

keep in mind Garmin has indicated they are going to release the Fenix 9 by the end of the year which should push prices down again

also factory refurbished Garmin is practically new for half the price usually

Could you share some insight on the state of Garmin? I don't really keep up with what they're doing. Figured I'd be getting another Instinct when mine eventually dies, but if there are reasons to avoid the brand these days it'd be nice to know.

after 2020 their feature development and the number of bugs became really bad

also this Epix2 is based on the Fenix7 which means as soon as the Fenix9 comes out later this year they won't update the software anymore

if it was a $200 refurb I'd say go for it

$500 no way, not even the $400 refurb listed by someone else

Garmin is coming out with $200 watches now like the forerunner 170 with more features than last year's flagships

I have an Instinct 3 and haven't noticed any fall-off in Garmin quality. That said, I've never ventured into the super high end side of their watches as I prefer MIPS and the Instinct line

Wearing this exact watch right now. It's been a massive upgrade from the Venu 3 I had previously, and I paid the same as this last Nov. I watched the price on this for a year, and the lowest it ever get was about $475 new, IIRC. I was eyeing the Fenix 8 Sapphire, but $800+ for that was a no-go; this is the better option.
The upgraded sensors on this watch do a much better job on providing useful accurate data when working out and for recovery. Only gripe is that the display doesnt always turn on when I flick the wrist and i sometimes need to press a button or tap the screen. Minor annoyance, but worth it to get about 10 days of solid, heavy use between charges.
FWIW, I've used Garmin fitness watches going back to about 2007 when the "watch" was like strapping on a mini tablet to your wrist and required a special USB cradle to sync with Garmin Connect desktop. I've had Forerunners, Vivoactives, Venus and now this one, and the build quality on this is excellent compared to the last 2.
The current software ecosystem is much much better, and the android Connect app works flawlessly. Did Garmin make a mistake by doing the whole Garmin+ BS? Yes. Does it impact you in anyway if you use this watch for 95% of it's intended function? No - just use it like any other Garmin watch and ignore the upsell.
