I have been looking at these for a while. I haven't purchased one because it jus does not look all that secure. If they are fitting the battery and motor into the same size form factor as a regular deadbolt lock then they had to remove something like steel framing or solid metal. Anyone have these? Thoughts?

Lockpicking lawyer gets it open with low skill attempt. That video is quite old though.

This appears to be an older version.
Also this is through a third party at walmart. Based in miami with terrible reviews.

I have what I believe is the previous, discontinued version of this model (level lock+), and I did exhaustive research beforehand to make sure I'd be comfortable with the security level. After owning them for a while now I still am comfortable with them security-wise, although there are other frustrations I've encountered.

In terms of security concerns the ones that I see come up most often are:
- Bolt itself will be too fragile and not prevent door from being kicked open
- It's easy to pick (usually with the lockpicking lawyer vid)
The bolt fragility, I found some reddit discussion where somebody posted about their door with a level lock being kicked and the bolt not breaking, and that was good enough for me before I bought. I haven't tried to kick my door down to test that for myself but I've had a fridge fall over into it and it handled it just fine. I also have a giant window next to my door so I decided if I'm in "kicking the door down" level of breaking in, they're gonna get in and it's not really that relevant to me if the bolt holds.
The easy to pick thing is technically correct but is easily solvable and people usually miss the actual takeaway from that lockpicking lawyer vid (which I watched before buying and I recommend you do as well). Basically, his complaint was it comes with a shitty cylinder, and for the shelf price of the lock he thinks you should get a better one included. I don't disagree, but you can just buy a more secure cylinder for it. They're standard schlage cylinders and easy to get replacements for.

Frustrations:
1) The first one is entirely on me, like they repeatedly made me confirm I realized it might have issues before I inflicted it on myself. I was able to have them upgrade the firmware to support matter (not sure if that would be the case for this version as well or not, I'd check with their support if matter support would be make or break, they were responsive when I reached out), which I did knowingly at my own risk. The frustration, which they warned me about repeatedly is it's not an easy process to just pair matter devices to any edge router, and I do not own and do not wish to buy an apple home device to pair it to which is basically the known-working route for them with matter. I'm off doing self-hosted homeassistant setups and haven't been able to get it hooked into that. Not a huge deal for me, I knew the risk and I can still connect to it over bluetooth from my phone, with their little credit card nfc key replacements, and of course with the physical key. Also if you're fine with using it via homekit you can just not care about matter and use it with homekit just fine.
2) Much more of an issue in my opinion, they are really not messing around when they say make sure there's no binding/friction on the bolt when you turn it. I let myself have some slack on that and it turns out there is a liiiiiitle piece of plastic which makes the thumbturn on the inside of the door actually send/retract the bolt. If there's friction and you say, have visiting relatives who just turn it harder when they encounter friction, that plastic will snap and you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door using the thumbturn. It's possible this is not an issue in the new version, but it might be! I fixed the hole and strike plate positioning and it's no longer an issue, but a small plastic piece breaking being the culprit will always make me mad.
Overall, I'm still happy with them, but I think you really need to consider what matters to you in a smart lock before you pull the trigger on them. The big things for me were I determined I was fine with the security for my situation (and fine with buying new cylinders), and I really wanted a lock that would just look and act like a regular deadbolt when I wasn't doing smartlock things to it. I knew I didn't want to do homekit and that might limit my smart capabilities but I was willing to take that on at the price and experiment because that's a hobby for me as well.
