I have a genuine question for folks who own or buy Gibson/Epiphone.

With most of the non-US models being made in China, Indonesia/Korea factories, I'm trying to understand if the price is for the brand or for the quality/craftsmanship.

The reason why I'm asking, is because - certain Chinese companies like Westcreek or Firefly or Fesley (there are TONS) are offering better specs for lower cost.

Is it just pure brand value surcharge or is there some special sauce in the pickups that are being used etc.

A big part of buying a guitar is trying it out. People call out specific brands as having QC issues, but honestly every brand is gonna have variations. And stuff like weight is always gonna vary within an individual model even. Many of the random brands that people recommend aren't available to try in store.

A well manufactured Epiphone will often exceed the quality of a poorly built Gibson. There are quality control issues with any manufacturer regardless of the country of origin, but at the end of the day you are paying a premium for the Gibson or Epiphone name on that headstock. I own 3 Gibsons and I would argue my PRS SE Holcomb is a nicer instrument if you are just comparing build quality. The Gibsons have a feel and nostalgia for me that you can't necessarily put a price on. I love them both.

The one listed (custom) has the nicer headstock, but "Proprietary humbucker"? Come on. MF has free shipping , yes, but check the used market for a bargain. Epiphone Les Paul Lemon Burst outfit (incl. Epi case) all Gibson electronics--999 new at Guit. Ctr; I just got a used one locally for 450.
