I just got these delivered from when they were on sale last week.

Very nice hardcover copies.. high quality binding, printing etc.

If you wanna upgrade your collection from old paperbacks, this is definitely a boost. Good deal too since its 4 books, like 20$ a copy for this quality print is solid.

I have this set. The paper used for the colored illustrations is different from the paper used for the regular text (i.e. the colored illustration paper is similar to printer paper, while the text is printed on uncoated paper you'd find in most novels). I think they really optimized this for readability over collectibility. For contrast, the 2004 edition of the Ted Nasmith illustrated The Silmarillion prioritized the quality of the images by printing everything on a glossy paper and is a physically much larger book so the images are beautiful, but it's much less comfortable to read due to glare from the glossy paper and the size of the book.
