As far as full frame cameras go the Z5 is relatively small but it's still not a "small" camera. The 24-50 also isn't very wide nor does it have a long reach so what you want you could do with it would be limited.

For normal hiking I love my z30. It gets grief from people because it doesn't have a view finder. But it's small, the screen folds in to cover the screen, and it still takes great photos. I toss that thing in my day pack and I just don't care if it gets beat up. After several years on hiking with it, it's still in great shape.

This camera is now, with the sale, at the same price range as the Z50 II...you'd still go with a Z30 tho?

If I had a to choose only 1 camera I would get the z50ii over the z30. But for hiking, I would still pick the z30 as it's smaller and lighter than the z50ii. For everyday needs though, the z50ii beats the z30.

Seriously, nobody on slick deals know remotely a thing or two on camera?

This is junk. The Z5 auto focus would struggle a lot if you shoot any portrait or use prime. I sold mine in 2024. If you have to support Nikon, the worst you would want is a expeed7 camera. Z5ii for example is way better at $1199 in regular refurbished deal.

Hardly junk, but yes, the Z5ii is MUCH better. Still, the refurb right now on Nikon's site with this lens is $1719. The "regular refurbished deal" is body only and somewhat difficult to nail down (with lens, it's $300-400 more). There's also the warranty issue. For many users, this is a capable entry into full-frame mirrorless. Could be that it's not the other folks who don't "know remotely a thing or two on camera [sic]"...

I would not recommend this camera setup brand new. There's a few options I'd suggest instead of getting the Z5 new or an alternative.

1. Buy the Z5 used or refurbished from a reputable camera store. A lot of these bodies only can be had between $600-$800. I was glad Nikon USA this past December had it available Refurbished for a deep discount of $460, which was an awesome deal. KEH.com and MPB.com offer 6 month warranties on their used cameras.

2. Get the Z50II instead of the Z5 for roughly the same price. The Z50II has a crop sensor instead of a full frame sensor, but the autofocus system is much better than the Z5 if one wants better eye detection and fast moving subject tracking.

3. Buy a Z5II body only from Nikon USA when they have a sale on their refurbished products once a month for four days on their website. The refurbished Z5II sell for around $1,250 with the discounted price, which gets you a full frame sensor with the better autofocus system.

The Z5 is still a good camera, depending what one is shooting. Once you understand its limitations with the autofocus system, it can be great for landscapes, group pictures, and portraits. For fast action, I don't recommend the Z5, instead, the Z50II or the Z5II are better options for that type of photography, as well as landscapes and portraits.

People who say Expeed 6 cameras are junk probably aren't using the right AF settings. The Z bodies are more complicated, and you have to read up on what settings to use, even on something like a Z8.

The Z5 also has face detect and eye detect, which can screw up the focus if not set up right.

My opinion: skip this. Its full frame, but if you truly need full frame, then you'll need more than this camera is capable of. For "entry level" shooters, I think the z50ii is a better option. Plenty of pros shooting micro4/3, so apc is more than enough for entry level (and we'll beyond).

Generally agree, but this price includes a lens that's usually valued about $300, so the a refurb body at $800 is actually something of a loss bc of warranty. I'm not sure I'd even spring for it at $600 unless I already had Z lenses.

I have a z5 that I take hiking with me and my family (2 kids under 5 so nothing super serious just 5-10 miles on trails) I generally carry it with a 24-70mm (or 28mm if I want something smaller) around my neck or just with a wrist strap. It can get a bit heavy but for a full frame it's not awful. Overall I love the camera and would highly recommend it but make sure you update it's firmware though because they fixed a lot of AF issues in some of the more recent updates.
