Recent research links the popular sugar substitute xylitol to a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes. Xylitol promotes "thrombosis" (blood clotting) by making platelets in your blood stickier and more sensitive to clotting signals. The findings stem from a major Cleveland Clinic Study and were published in the European Heart Journal.
