I purchased this last year for $50 off... any case they sent me an European version and had some issues with updating my software, but once got that taken care of, it's been working fine.

If be all over a model like this if the geoid wasn't an option but after picking a geoid up for my power meter equipped commuter bike, I just can't justify $200+ for a computer anymore, despite some of the small quirks and lack of memory on the geoid.

Why is the $199 price at home depot? Doesn't exactly seem like something they'd sell, but it's been a while since I've been there. Are they an electronics store now, too?

Based on reviews on Amazon, most say it works, some said it didn't for them. So I passed on it because of this, and just got the Explore 2 since my multiple Garmin Edge devices always worked with my Varia.

How does this compare to the Edge 540/840?

size wise this is like an edge1040 without all the training features (Strava, etc), but if you only need navigation I think its a good deal. I just got an edge 1040 for $350 (special closeout situation) and that was a great price so $180 for this is a pretty good price IMO if you don't need the advanced training stuff. and if you happen to already have a Garmin watch that includes all the training stuff, putting the two together will give you the same thing as the more expensive computers.

DC rainmaker has a good comparison https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2022/...eview.html

I looked around a couple months ago, and I believe the Explore 2 has shorter battery life (partly because of the MIP/TFT) and doesn't provide some of the "advanced" features/metrics (workout plan, training status, etc.). I think at one point, the Explore line didn't have dynamic routing, but it apparently does now.

I personally prefer a MIP screen for battery life and better visibility in direct sun, but for someone looking to offload navigation from their phone and get basic stats on their rides, I think you could do a lot worse than an Explore 2 for $180, especially if you're already in the Garmin ecosystem with a watch or something.
