This AOOSTAR mini PC stands out as a compact homelab and light AI box with a Ryzen 7 Pro 6850H, 24GB of onboard LPDDR5, and OCuLink for external GPU use. The included memory alone is a big part of the value, and the machine has been used successfully for Kubernetes, Proxmox, OPNsense, and eGPU setups. The soldered RAM cannot be upgraded, the integrated Radeon 680M is dated for gaming or heavier AI work, and brand support has a poor reputation. It looks best suited to small, practical builds rather than long term storage or high maintenance workloads.

I'm sorry, but I don't have the experience in that area to give you a good response. I am personally focused primarily on equipment for a home lab. Most home lab things don't need a lot of resources. A Raspberry Pi or an old laptop can handle most things. Some big exceptions are LLMs (AI). Those benefit from lots of memory, fast memory, and dedicated computing hardware like GPUs. I have been using OCuLink to connect old NVIDIA Tesla GPUs externally to a desktop. Making the GPU external gets around needing a massive case to hold the aftermarket cooling that needs to be added to these GPUs. And it allowed me to use old 400W to 550W PSUs I had lying around for the GPUs without needing to replace the PSU in my desktop with something more powerful. This external GPU use case ended up working fine for me. But a big difference between my use case and gaming is that for LLM workloads that fit on a single GPU, the PCIe speed makes little difference. It mainly speeds up loading the model. After that, very little PCIe bandwidth is used. A PCIe 3.0 x4 link (~4 GB/s) is plenty fast. This is different from gaming where there is constant communication between the GPU and the rest of the system. The performance in many games is crippled by lowered GPU bandwidth and increased latency. But I believe how much varies greatly by game.
This is only the case for inference in AI land...once the model is loaded onto the card itself, everything is about the cards memory bandwidth.

But if you're training your own model...ie: sending information back and forth for the card to decode, then the oculink is a huge liability. At that point get the beelink gti series. They have an 8x port for eGPU.

If you are starting from scratch it's better to just get a whole PC. Egpu is nice if you already have parts laying around or if you already have a miniPC that you are using. For instance I have a Lenovo Legion Go already as well as a RX6800 from a previous build, I picked up a egpu dock for 150ish to use them together.
What if I have a 1TB SSD?

that has nothing to do with this. if you still need the bulk of a PC then just buy a PC.

It looks like it should work, but I'd have to ask why? This guy did a write up based on his experience testing add-in cards on an ASRock board: https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/c...s_to_work/

Doing this seems pretty extra. You'd need a breakout cable, a mechanism to mount, cool, and power the HBA (some LSI 93xx need external power), then attachment to your disk array, and that all seems... Like a lot of attachments for storage hosted on a mini PC.

I'd say if you want a NAS, troll ebay/marketplace for used workstations. The HP Z420 comes to mind as a good option to build a NAS: ample power, DDR3 ECC support (cheap used RAM, $10-15 per 8GB), ample 5.25 and 3.5 slots to hold up to 7 HDDs without much effort, efficient 650w PSU, and ample PCIe for expansion if you wanted to do an external HBA to a disk array. Add an intel X520 10G NIC and an LSI 9300x and you have a very capable Truenas server ready to rock.

On the other hand, doing a NAS with this would be cool, but sometimes it's best to stick with tried and true over cool.
I'm planning a custom enclosure for 20+ drives. I don't think a Z420 is going to be even close to powerful enough for my parity checks. Looking for a small efficient solution.

Check to make sure your SSD can be put into this one. It can be A or AB and I think one more but it's probably ok?

Yeah if you're talking 60TB+ array an E5-1650v2 would be a bottleneck for sure. My next question is would you want to limit your host to 24GB of RAM and 2.5G Ethernet?

I'm all for it based on flex alone, regardless of me questioning it.

Coupon JJY58P still works for me. Coupon 58USDEALSS also worked.
