The litter gets trapped in their fur, so they carry it with them for a distance.
The very small mats miss a lot of the litter they track.
A longer piece of carpeting will help catch more. The indoor - outdoor works well because you can pick it up and shake the litter back into the litter box; carpeting with a "pile" tends to hold the litter in the carpeting.
You won't catch all the litter. The smaller granules of litter used in clumping litter are the problem. The non-clumping litter doesn't tend to get tracked out of the box the way clumping litter does, but clumping litter has other benefits.
In terms of everything else, it was nice but I went with an easier to clean one the next time.

1) if you are maximizing on your kitty litter, this does a GREAT JOB allowing you to reuse cat litter that falls off of the cat and off of their paws. You have to clear it depending on frequency of bathroom runs by your cat.
2) If you are rich and don't care - this does a bad job because it does not give enough texture for the cat's paw to 'wipe clean' as they are exiting, so the litter kind of spreads outwards as they 'shake' it off their paws. You need carpet or something similar to prevent this.
Best of both worlds: get this and then get a carpet to prevent further tracking of litter out of the litter box.
