This open box GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS ELITE AX is attractive as a low cost DDR5 Z790 board with Wi Fi 6E, and the price drew interest as a backup or future upgrade part. The board itself has been solid in at least one open box purchase, and the serial based warranty setup may still leave coverage in place. The main cautions are open box motherboard risk, possible bent pins or other hidden defects, and the hassle of troubleshooting or replacing a board later. DDR5 tuning can also take work, with XMP stability varying by kit and speed.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. The board can be finicky with DDR5 XMP, especially with 2x32GB kits, and one reported fix is slightly increasing VCCSA/VDD2/VDDQ voltage. Another setup was only mostly stable at 6000 MT/s and not at 6400 MT/s.

  • At $68, the board is viewed as a strong deal, and open-box does not automatically mean the board is bad. The main practical downside is the added cost of DDR5 memory, plus the risk that an open-box unit may arrive with defects like bent socket pins.

  • It may still have warranty because Gigabyte, MSI, and Asus often track coverage by serial number. Even so, warranty claims can take weeks and may still leave you rebuilding the PC if the board has to be replaced.

  • Yes. Swapping the motherboard can trigger reactivation for both Windows and Microsoft Office, though one workaround mentioned is using Microsoft Activation Scripts in PowerShell, which can finish in under a minute.

  • No. All of the M.2 slots on this board are wired for PCIe 4.0, so it does not offer a PCIe 5.0 NVMe slot.

Used/open-box mobo has to be the worst idea to buy for building a pc cheapily lol. 1. There's no legit "test" to make sure all the features are in working order. In other words troubleshooting is a pita 2. There are some features you might not use till months later. 3. Claiming warranty from OEM is a shit show. 4. Replacing your mobo is basically like rebuilding a whole pc because you have to disassemble everything in it. I guess it depends how much you value your time and how much you love trouble shooting. YouTube Greg Salazar. Lol that's the troubleshooting you're going to have to do if anything goes wrong.
I'm 100% there. Also you can't stash-buy. Like I'd only get this up upgrade my z790 in ddr4 months or years later. but then there's no warranty... I've had better luck with the usedb market than the returned market.

No PCIe 5.0 M.2 Slots: All of the M.2 slots (for your NVMe SSDs) are wired for PCIe 4.0. There are no PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots on this board.

What's dumb take. I've purchased tons of open box motherboards and rarely had an issue.

Good for you. "rarely" means you still had issues though.

I'm not against buying used. But a used mobo is a big no no from me.

For those who don't know: A.I. data centers have caused a rush on RAM - it is MUCH more expensive now that it was just 6 months ago; this applies to RAM, SSD drives, etc... anything with a "chip". If you can wait 6 months to a year to build (or use an older platform like DDR3), do.

I normally don't make posts, but reading the comments took me here. You know what, this price is a deal for a motherboard. Open box does not mean it's a bad board. I've purchased many open box electronics and parts and rarely have I run into an issue. The only issue I see with this purchase is the price it's going to cost for the memory.

Yes, it's a DDR5 board. If it was DDR4 I'd jump on that in an instant if, for no other reason, to use as a backup mainboard if the one in my unRAID server were to ever die.

Also replacing the MB will require re-activation of Windows and MS Office.
This is the easiest task - if you have a legitimate license reactivating Windows is going to be less than 5 minutes

Usually rhese boards dont come qith back plate seperate. The higher end boards now has built in back plates that covers the vram, etc.

Unless you truly need it, why not break with Windows entirely? A.I. has made Linux accessible... it is a game changer. I have switched to Debian 13 GNOME and couldn't be happier.
